Community-run Discord server now open (in beta)

Heya!

After quite some time now, I feel that this community is ready to expand to Discord via a new community-made server! Again, as mentioned in my last post:

The rules are a little bit different (some rules are inspired by the forum itself) from the unofficial Telegram/Matrix groups, but they should be familar. I will also enforce these rules fairly.

You can join the server here. If you are a Zorin Forum user, you can get the Forum Insider role, with access to a Zorin Forum member channel.

Quick note:

This server is unofficial and is not created nor moderated by the Zorin Group.

I'm too much of an old dog, to go on changing over to a chat forum. Infact, its my view, that far too many website forums shutdown, just to switch to Discord, forcing people to get a Discord account, in order to get ahold of a software developer, cause they also didn't bother to leave a contact email link.

Discord was originally invented to be a gaming chat service. Now its span off to many other ventures, which is cool. And were certainly not opposed to users helping each other in the Discord server, the more the better right? Plus its live based chat, so answers come quicker.

But as far as the moderating team is concerned, we are tasked with our work here, and so it will stay. Plus, I prefer the forum format, where we have time to compose our messages, where we can put more thought into them. I grew up on the long form of communication, and I am not afraid to type up a page lol.

Its similar to the much older generation, where all they did was reading newspapers and watching the cathode ray tube. (CRT's for you youngsters) My generation couldn't wait for those color pictures to come sooner in newspapers, magazines were ok, not really my thing though.

I was never a fan of having to truck through snow, just to go to the library though, nope, I didn't like that! But the internet was a game changer! The first website message boards came online in the 90's, and those couldn't come sooner! My generation was already tired of having to send snail mail letters in the mail, but thats how we used to communicate back then, that, or the landline phone.

We were all so funny on the first message boards, we couldn't stop cracking jokes and sharing cat pictures with each other. We all felt like we had to top one another with, who's got the cutest cat? HAHA! Ahhh, like Archie Bunker said, those were the days, and the internet was fun then.

Well, to clarify, the internet is still fun, its improved, still a library of resources and information. However, parts of the internet has decayed into places you should stay away from. The first social networking site that came around was Myspace. That was a very short-lived website, because Facebook took over quickly.

Anyways, I don't do any of that Twitch chat, twitch bit, memory in a flip, Tik Tok dancing on the clock, hoping you don't fall off and have a drop, along with the clock. Too old for that useless garbage.

Yeah, only time I use Discord, is to get a hold of a dev who has no other contact ability. Personally, I consider it unprofessional for a dev to use Discord as their only method of contact, but thats just my opinion folks, don't get your BP up over my account. lol.

But yeah sure, in regards to unofficial support, I am sure the unofficial Discord Zorin chat server, will be a nice alternative for some folks. Just try to keep it civil in there, its harder then you think on a Discord server. Just check out the OPENRGB Discord server, I've witnessed people using fowl language there, not good for kids.

I mean, personally, you don't HAVE to enter the server if you don't feel comfortable. Just because I invented a new way to expand the Zorin Community, doesn't mean I want the forum to die off. The forum is alive and IMO it should stay that way.

I mean, I appreciate your feedback, but I think those people in the OPENRGB Discord server need to go back to school to learn a lesson LOL.

Oh I know, and I never said you did anything wrong either, its good to have more then one way to get support, and I appreciate that you have setup a place, where younger folks who feel more comfortable with Discord, can get the support they need. :+1:

Additionally, knowing how awesome you are, you are likely to provide links to tutorials like those of SWARF, and other how to tutorials here on this forum as well, on Discord. This is nothing but awesome IMO. :+1:

Yeah, you are telling me! Did you know that their supposed stable release 0.9 is 3-years old now? Everybody who uses OPENRGB, are being recommended to use the 0.91 Experimental version, cause its the only version that supports anything modern.

And furthermore, they are way behind the game of even supporting older hardware that is 3-years old, and even older within the Experimental release. Then they put the owness on folks like us, to install and use Wireshark, to get captures. Basically doing the work for them.

Most folks who took 1-look at a Wireshark capturing window, and saw all the numbers, letters, all over the place, wouldn't know the first thing to do, to find their device in a mesh of the Matrix code I call it, to even begin the capturing process.

I think the OPENRGB dev's, while well intentioned and all, need to really up their game, when it comes to their SOP, because I can tell you right now, I'm not impressed.
