Compatibility with ryzen 9 ai 370hx?

I am new to linux and really like Zorin OS having played around with it on an old laptop. I'd really like to use it for my main laptop and purchase the Pro version.

My hesitation is only that my main laptop is quite recent and has the Ryzen 9 AI 370hx which I understand may need a later linux kernel 6.10+ which is not integrated into Zorin 17 yet (and may not be until Zorin 18).

My questoin is - does the incompatible mean it won't work, or just that it won't support the latest NPU features on the chip (which I don't really care about)?

Is there a workaround so Zorin 17 will work on it, while we want for 18 to be available?

Hello,

It may not work optimal without the latest kernel, but it's possible to install a newer kernel on Zorin OS 17 to get it to work optimal.
Have you tried the Live session of Zorin?

Hi and welcome.

I am sure Aravisian wrote a how-to on injecting a new kernel in live mode (could be wrong).
In the meantime you could try PCLOS Debian Plasma which can be made to look like any version of Windows you want with the correct themes chosen. It uses Liqurix kernel 6.12, possibly 6.13 now. I had to rescue my PCLOS Debian to another drive after Endeavour OS wiped most of it away and now I think I have a partition issue which might be a mismatch on the inodes.

Welcome to the Forum!

When it needs Kernel 6.10 and later, You could install a newer Kernel like describeted here:

To check if it would run with the default 6.8 Kernel, You could start the Live Mode with choosing ''Try Zorin''.

Yes I'm running a live session now before using mainline to update the kernel seems to require a reboot which won't work for testing purposes....

I am reading up about mainline and updating the kernel - it seems the risk is that the distro may not be 100% compatible with later kernels if the team hasn't integrated and tested it yet. What is the risk of running Zorin OS on kernel 6.14?

BTW, I have done a live session off USB and round I can only boot in "safe graphics mode" - the other ones just stop black screen.

This is odd as it's a new laptop with RTX4070 64GB RAM and 370hx (ProArt P16)

Why would booting Zorin require safe graphics model on this configuration?

Ah, You have an additional Nvidia Graphics Card ... I thought, You only use the AMD Chip with integrated Graphics. So, this could be because of Your Nvidia Graphics.

Other Things, you could check:

  • Are secure Boot and Fast Boot ins BIOS turned off?
  • If Windows is installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows tunred off?
  • Is Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
  • What Tool did You use to create the bootable USB Stick?
  • Did You check the checksum of the Zorin ISO?

That's a good question. When you boot off of USB, at the GRUB menu (the one that you pick safe graphics mode on), go with the option that hangs, but don't hit enter. Hit e and look for the words "quiet" and "splash", and delete just those two words. Then hit F10, and it should try to start without the black screen, showing all kinds of output about what it's doing at the moment. When it hangs, you'll be able to see what it was trying to do at the time and narrow down the problem.
