Computer crashed and thinks zorin isnt installed anymore

Hi I just created a zorin lite bootable USB drive because my dell xps decided to die.

Basically I was minding my work in brave as I noticed it was getting slow. So I ran the update cmd and after that decided to restart the laptop.

Thats when it only booted in the BIOS and even though zorin was selected it wouldnt boot anympore.

I have both installed on this machine now zorin lite and standard and I would like to get back into standard since all my work is there. Is there a way to do this?

What do you mean the laptop had died? If you had problems booting, and now are also having issues booting, i suspect that the disk drive may be failing. It is common that commonly accessed parts of a drive fail first (certain files, even the boot manager of each os). I would perform a smart scan, if you have compatible hardware. If not, the age of the drive can be an indicator that you need to replace it (more than five years old).

Without more details of your machine specs, how it had previously "died" as well as the age of the drive (same one that was in the computer that died?), I'm speculating.

A new hard drive will ensure that is not the drive. Your data can be transferred from the original drive by accessing it as a secondary drive.

Until then, not into a live image, backup your data to the internet or another device (thumb drive, external drive, etc...).

How do I perform a smart scan?

Its a dell xps 13 2in1 about 3 years old maybe even less and I am not very techy:)

In Disks (zorin menu, type disks):

Select the drive of interest, then click on the menu button at the upper right corner and choose SMART Data & self tests.

Types of self-tests:

  • Short: Checks the electrical and mechanical performance as well as the read performance of the disk. Electrical tests might include a test of buffer RAM, a read/write circuitry test, or a test of the read/write head elements. Mechanical test includes seeking and servo on data tracks. Scans small parts of the drive's surface (area is vendor-specific and there is a time limit on the test). Checks the list of pending sectors that may have read errors, and it usually takes under two minutes.

  • Long/extended: A longer and more thorough version of the short self-test, scanning the entire disk surface with no time limit. This test usually takes several hours, depending on the read/write speed of the drive and its size.Conveyance: Intended as a quick test to identify damage incurred during transporting of the device from the drive manufacturer to the computer manufacturer. Only available on ATA drives, and it usually takes several minutes.

Shared from hard drive - How can I check the SMART status of a SSD or HDD on current versions of Ubuntu 14.04 through 20.04? - Ask Ubuntu

Thank you I will test them now.

Hmm, turns out disks shows these smart test option only greyed out to me. I can not select any of them.

That means you're hardware isn't supported for SMART. That is ok.

Have you had any issues with corrupt files. How did the computer "die" previously and was it this machine?

It didnt die as such. It started to get really laggy while surfing the web. All I am doing is have 4 brave windows open with a ton of tabs and i am wroting content. Several extensions like grammarly and I noticed the computer getting slow again so I decided to just restart it and that's when it wouldn't boot back anymore.

Are there any tests I can run in terminal and give you more details?

Check bios for secure boot, ensure it's off. If the drive is NVMe, ensure that AHCI is enabled, not a RAID. Do you know what kind of drive you have? Mechanical, ssd, NVMe?

Argh, no I dont know what drive I have?

So you have integrated graphics or an nvidia card? There may be a sticker on the keyboard area (if you didn't remove it) that says radeon or nvidia. There may be a few things we can check using the live image.

I know i dont have an nvidia card and the sticker says intel core i7 10thgen.

That's OK. We'll find out more in the live image. Once booted into the live image, hit try Zorin. Bring up the terminal (ctrl + alt + t) and type lshw... it'll provide a lot of info, paste it in the thread (you'll be able to open Firefox on the live image, get on the forum and respond right from the computer).

I will have to try that tonight.

I'm in mountain standard time, so may not be available then, but I'm not the only one that can help. Post it when you can.

WARNING: output may be incomplete or inaccurate, you should run this program as super-user.

Ok, you have an NVMe 256GB drive. This helps. In the bios, under storage (or drives), check that the drive is using AHCI and not configured as RAID. While in the bios, check under security to ensure safe boot is off (safe boot is driver signing, created and handled by Microsoft). Once those are configured this way, boot into the installed zorin to see what happens.

Morning, Secure boot was turned on so I changed it to off and it was already in AHCI. Since I know have zorin lite and standard as a boot option I ticked to load in standard but it will only load in lite.

If you would, boot into lite, open disks and share a screenshot of the system disk partitions.
