Desktop shortcut missing - Zorin 17 file manager 😭

The desktop shortcut is missing in the side bar in zorin 17. This is extremly annoying. For some reason, this wasnt an issue as the first time i installed Zorin 17, it came with nautilus version 46.2 somehow, which had a desktop bar in the side bar????

but now i installed it again and it has 42.6 and no desktop?? what is going on :frowning:

i tried sudo upgrade nautilus but it says its newest version which it wrong since
47.0 is the newest ;/

Also, PopOS also has nautilus 42.6 and it has the desktop in the side bar. but zorin 17 has a weird non zorin style icon for Desktop and no option in the side bar, even with SAME nautilus version :sob:

why popOS, ubuntu, and fedora has it but zorin 17 doesnt :frowning:

and no, the nemo and thunar dont look as good with the zorin UI.. i dont like it :frowning:

Could it be a setting somewhere? I looked but nothing jumped out at me. But I have Desktop in sidebar. I also have the "weird non zorin style icon for Desktop" though, which I think I have always had but can't swear to it.

@zorincore-desktop are you on Wayland? Can you just drag your Desktop folder to the sidebar and make a bookmark of it?

I can confirm this, I can't see the desktop on the right either.

Are you on Wayland?

@j_luz

POP OS runs with Gnome 42 and Zorin 17 with Gnome 43. That could be a Factor on this. A Possibility to try is to change to Xorg and look if it is there again. The other Option has @Dexxa already presented: Move the Desktop Icon to the left to the Sidebar. Then it will be added as a Bookmark. I did that too in the Past. Not the best Solution but it is something.

And this ''weird'' Desktop Icon is normal. That is from the Zorin Icon set.

  1. Toggle "Show Hidden Files" in the file manager using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+H, or through the preferences menu:

  2. Navigate to the hidden .config folder, and delete the files user-dirs.dirs and user-dirs.locale.

  3. Close the file manager, and open the Terminal from the Zorin Menu → Utilities → Terminal, and run the command:

    xdg-user-dirs-update

This should regenerate those files you just deleted. Once you launch the file manager again, did it fix the problem? If not, can you show the contents of the new user-dirs.dirs file?

Interesting Idea. I tried that directly but it didn't on my System worked unfortunately. What I thought: Could it be that it is a Language Issue when You use a non-english System Language?

I had the same issue. Changing to X11 returns the Desktop shortcut in the right place in Nautilus for me.

I tried adding it as bookmark but the Desktop gets put in a seperate section i want it above the Documents, like it is in windows ..

its a main thing stopping me switching from windows 11 :joy:

I tried changing in the login screen because i saw option Zorin XORG, and the desktop is added

but then i read that XORG is some old thing and might become obselete? :sob:

So im worried its not a permanent solution :frowning: And also is it safe to use Zorin in this "XORG mode" instead of the normal mode?

thanks  ideally id like to use the normal mode zorin instead incase its newer or more updated?

Someone will hopefully answer this for you, because I'm not sure. I use the X one on Zorin because the Wayland one is too buggy for my graphics. Also on FreeBSD I use the X because it is considered established whereas Wayland is being slowly implemented to prevent breaking systems since the people at FreeBSD do not seem to consider Wayland to be quite production ready. I must say, in these matters I defer all judgement to what the people of FreeBSD say, because they are super serious and precise about things.

I think that is far from true. Xorg (X11) may be old, but it continues to work, wheras Wayland has well documented issues for some time.

We are constantly having to ask users if they are on Wayland (default) or X11 when responding to their questions, then suggesting try X11. It is almost as common as asking "have you tried switching it off and on again"

You don't have to worried about that. It is so: There are 2 Display Managers. Xorg/X11 and Wayland. X11 is the older one and Wayland the newer one. X11 is a bit more reliable because it had more Time. That is at the Moment - more or less - all about that. Yes, at some Point in the Future it will be that Xorg will disappear from (most) Stuff, but that is more a mid-term Time Thing. So, You can use it for now.

Even if that were true, which most definitely is not, so what? Use whatever works for you.

To put things into perspective, Wayland was created around the same time as smartphones. So, newer than Xorg, but not exactly new either, and not exactly stable even after this many years...

oh i see. So Wayland is newer but still not as stable as xorg. so its ok to use xorg mode zorin.

but im confused with difference in gnome and wayland and this xorg :smiling_face_with_tear::pray:

Yeah, one of the "downsides" from open source is that you have so many choices that it's confusing and can lead to Analysis Paralysis.
Another big problem with having choices is polarization: there are a lot of people who are so eager to have the latest technology possible that they constantly push for the exclusive use of Wayland, even when it just doesn't make sense to do it. Although I don't think that Wayland is to blame in this particular case, at least not entirely, as this bug is a bit strange. In fact, I'm testing it right now with Wayland and everything seems to work fine.

The bottom line is: try both and use what's best for your particular needs.

That isn't so easy either. The Thing is: The Implementation from Wayland in Gnome 43 is on another Level like on the up-to-date Gnome Version 47. The Implementation of Wayland is there simply further. Nvidia Support is a good Example for that.

Here on Zorin 17 it is better to use Xorg for Nvidia. When You have a System with Gnome 47 (or at least Gnome 46.1) or KDE 6.1+ You get because of a Technology called Explicit Sync with Nvidia Driver 555+ a better Support for Nvidia Cards. But here on Zorin 17 with Gnome 43 this Type of Progress isn't relevant.
