This problem does not happen with Steam games. I play entirely using my controller that I had to make special udev rules for. Disabling the screensaving options fixes the problem as expected, but I would like to keep them on while making Zorin OS recognize that I am not inactive while playing my game.
You might use Caffeine
during game play.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install caffeine

If I'm reading this correctly, it simulates keystrokes? Seems like a hackish solution that may have unintended consequences. However, if this is the least obtrusive method then I may have no choice but to use it. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
