@dasjdoom Yes, you can rely on the website, but not entirely. It will look like a long list, but not all applications can be found there. That is why I asked to run the xdg-mime query default type/subtype to find the related application. For example, if you want to find the application for .odt files, you can run something like xdg-mime query filetype ~/Documents/example.odt.
