For Nvidia you should be using X11, not Wayland.

Did you check if X11/Wayland ?

My GTX960 GPU is running on some sort of open source driver, and the system gives me an error message if I try to change it ?

Was that when attempting to select a Nvidia proprietary driver for Software and Updates?
Post a screenshot of error message.

Maybe backup of personal data then fresh installation of ZorinOS would be a quick solution to your woes.
