I installed and purged the package preload
.
Cue a few mins later I used the following command
man apt-get | grep reinstall
And I get the following output
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/local/lib/AppProtection/libAppProtection.so' from /etc/ld.so.preload cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

reinstall
reinstall is an alias for install --reinstall.
--reinstall
I can't help but wonder if this is some residue from the preload
package.
Also, a few days ago, I used boot-repair
to repair my grub, in case this information is useful.
