I have Zorin Core in a virtual machine (VMWare 17) to test it out. It uses an Ethernet connection, bridged (not NAT). I had an issue with slow Speedtest download speeds (uploads are fine) and found what seems to be the reason.
In the panel, I looked at "Wired" config and it reads Settings / Network / Connected 10 Mb/s
I went to Advanced Network Configuration, Ethernet tab. Scrolling down to "Link Negotiation" there were three options: Ignore (10 Mb/s greyed out), Automatic (100Mb/s greyed out) and Manual (allows me to select 1 Gb/s).
But herein lies the rub. Even if I select Automatic, or if I choose Manual, the link speed is unchanged at 10 Mb/s
I also entered the command ethtool <device> -s speed 1000
and no change.
This appears to be entirely a Zorin issue because no similar issues arise (or have ever arisen) in any other VM distro.
I even tried NAT in the VMWare settings, and the results were the same.
How can this be fixed?
Just out of curiousity, could you make a bootable usb with Zorin and just boot into the USB and see if the same issue occurs? I would just be curious if this is a Zorin issue with your network card OR an issue with zorin and VMWare?
You can choose to try from the bootable USB without making any permanent changes to your system, if that was worrying you at all*. I personally like to try that instead of a VM, strictly because it avoids any issues that the VM software MIGHT be causing (rare, but it happens).
Good idea. I can try that and report my results.
Booting to a live USB has completely different results.
Settings -> Network -> Wired, Connected 1000 Mb/s
Advanced Network Configuration -->
Editing Wired Connection
Link negotiation --> Ignore, Speed (greyed) 100 Mb/s
Both are Zorin 17.1
NOW what do I do?
Ok it sounds like Zorin can get the default gigabit speeds just fine then. So we can run off the assumption that this is an issue between Zorin and VMware.
A couple options you have at this point:
- Someone can give you some help and information about VMware (I don't really know too many specifics on that end, I mostly use other solutions)
- If this is just for a trial of Zorin, you could accept that for some reason the system just won't have full download speeds, and when you're ready to install officially, you could be rest assured that the speeds will work fine when you fully install
I would think this is a decision that you can make now. Depending on how much testing you're going to be doing with Zorin, I would think that maybe just accepting that the speeds are going to be a bit slower are ok for now? But like I said, if you are going to be doing A LOT of testing and requiring downloads, then maybe trying to figure it out is a good idea.
A key question is, whatever the issue, why is ethtool blocked from changing the settings?
