I've been looking for a way to extract archives (zip, tar) for a long time, and have finally found a very simple solution.
Uninstall File roller from the software center.
But you should always check the contents of a tarball or zip file, before extracting, in case it contains malware! Double-clicking won't check for potential malware!

But extracting would not execute the malware?
That depends how it was packaged. I included a procedure in the unofficial manuals for 15 and 17, courtesy of Blackwolf from Ultimate Edition Oz forum, which sadly no longer exists.

By removing this package you're also removing the ability to inspect them without the extraction in the file system. Everyone works differently, but that's just something to be aware of.
I find that the more explicit right-click -> Extract Here is simple enough, but also safer, as mentioned by @swarfendor437 .
