The Dodo went extinct because it was a very small isolated population on an island. They had large size and no natural predators and were not unintelligent. But lacking predation, failed to realize that human sailors would kill and eat them. The sailors found them to be very easy prey and showed zero self-control.
Yet another animal in the anthropogenic Mass Extinction.

That is the very reason why we have to protect the whale population. Because humans have been risking their extinction for years. Infact, a very old movie now called Star Trek 4, covered whailing quite heavily in that movie.
The whales names in the movie were George & Gracy. What some may nto know is, they were not real, anamatronic creations. And what I find hilarious, is folks in real life got angry with Paramount, accusing them of misstreating animals to make the movie.
Imagine their surprise when they learned they were anamatronic, I bet when that light bulb turned on in their heads, they realized they just outed themselves nation wide as being real dumbells lol.
Now days anamatronics are rarely used, replaced by modern CGI which is far superior.

The dolphin in SeaQuest DSV was a robot, too. Actually a series of robots.
They never used any real dolphins.

Oh my gosh, I loved Seaquest DSV! I liked that guy who played the Captain, same guy in Jaws too. That was a fun show when I was a kid, loved it. When you watch it today, its lost some of the appeal. But I still like the show though.

Roy Scheider.
He left the show when the writers went sideways. Scheider enthusiastically joined the cast when at the beginning, the writers produced scripts that dispelled common myths about oceanography and taught some science. It started out well.
In later seasons, hoping to boost ratings, the show writers went all kinds of Discovery Channel, trying to introduce Mer-people, UFO's and aliens and other obnoxious plot twists. Scheider felt that the show had moved away from its roots and not into a particularly good direction and quit.
The role was re-cast to Micheal Ironside - another great actor, but doom for the show. It got the axe not long after.
Of course... any review of recent shows that no one learned their lesson from any of it...

Yes, like Picard. Just how long do you think its gonna last? I seriously question it. They are gonna have to do an amazing job with their season 2, or face being squashed by Discovery, who's already had 3-seasons so far, and known to be fairly successful.
I love Patric Stewart, don't get me wrong, I got nothing wrong with him. But the script writing, the story direction of the show, the way Starfleet is now. I'm just not happy about the direction. So like I said, they gonna have to pull a rabbit out of their hats, or else that show is going to end up getting cancelled early.
