He tries it again - and chooses again POP_OS!
I find him too annoying to watch, but this once I'll give it a go... ![]()
Pop is one that I missed on my temporary trip round Linux distros, but having tried a number recently (after wiping Windows for the last time - the legendary wipe-from-space) I found none better than Zorin. I'm of the opinion that there is no kudos in trying a difficult distro (yes, I mean Arch) - all I want is a productive and stable OS, not one that vampires my days with abstruse demands to use the terminal (though I do when necessary). My particular installation of Zorin has an annoying sudden crash (an abrupt black screen, stone dead, but reboots fine in 30 seconds). I can live with that rather than spend yet more hours of my life trying to fix it.
SPOILER:
- and things didn't work great with PopOS again - and gets disappointed again

watching him rn!
I already saw it yesterday, yes. I would agree that these Lists are ... the People shouldn't take them too serious. Maybe as a Tip what you could try but not for ''Replace Windows with this immediately!''. That is in common not a good Way to handle the Switch in my Opinion.
And the Category ''Gaming Distro'' is a Thing, too. I wouldn't see Pop OS as a Gaming Distro. There, I would name:
- Nobara
- Bazzite
- CachyOS
You can add more Names to that but these would be my Suggestion if someone searches for a ''Gaming Distro'' - a Distro with Gaming in Focus.
I had to learn the hard way, that POP OS, is a terrible distro for gaming. Constant problems, all the time. POP pushing latest and greatest, breaks system. POP OS loading computer with 20 kernels, all of which won't load the system but one, and use up precious drive space for no reason. Whenever a big update rolls in, now computer doesn't boot, requiring me to spend precious time trying to fix.
Literally, all the problems with POP OS, has caused a family member, to only use their notebook, when they want to game on Half Life 2. They don't use their computer for nothing else. And more recently, now the computer won't plat any other game but HL2! I can't find the issue, and after wasting a freaking hour trying to figure it out, I gave up.
You know what they do all their other computing on? A tablet running Android. Yep, you heard that correct! Why? Cause its a million times easier for them, and its way more portable of a device as well. They are not computer savvy techs to fix problems, so if I can't fix it, they surely cna't.
Their tablet rarely crashes, maybe once per year at most. And when it does, you just stick a paper clip in the hole, literally a person with an IQ of 50 could do that! You don't need to be an outright genius to figure that out.
I've never tried Bazzite, I only heard of that like a year ago. From what I've heard however, sounds like its more of a gamers OS then POP OS is. Whether or not I install Bazzite or Mint in the future, depends on my research I do, when I am ready to make changes.
As of right now however, Zorin OS 18, has become a very well known disappointment in the community, and I am not going to put myself in another position, where I have to fight tooth and nail, to fix problems with my computer, when I should be spending my time on fixing engines, and mowing lawns, to make a living.
Thats all I have to say about that...

I wouldn't see Pop OS as a Gaming Distro at all. I can understand that People see it that Way abecause it offers current Kernels and Drivers. But I don't see this because of Gaming. I see this because they sell PC's and Laptops. And these have current Hardware. And when their own OS wouldn't be up-to-date enough to run on their Hardware that would be a big Problem.
LOL he tryed Pop OS last time and it failed...so what did he do....went right back to Pop OS.. talk about dumb.. its almost like he trying to show linux dont work at all.
I removed the last thing because it is an Insult. And at least: He tries it again.
This is the danger of the Z generation that haven't had the depth and experience of the breadth of GNU/Linux distributions.
I remember having been told to dispose of a Toshiba Satellite Pro, the early ones like a brick had low memory, a small drive and a floppy disk.
I tried booting off an external DVD/CD-RW drive. There was no option in the BIOS. It would have been a Windows 95 notebook.
Solution?
And what distribution did I use?
Wolvix, possibly Wolvix Cub.
https://archiveos.org/get/download-wolvix.html
Why? Because I could drill-down into the correct graphics settings and that worked. I suspect the current generation would not have a clue how to get an old rig working again.
More recently I recycled an i-686 machine with 512 Mb RAM and no 64-bit OS would install. Solution?
Which community?
I can't even remember the last time I saw a negative review about Zorin.
Right. I've tried a dozen distros over the years, including half a dozen since first installing Zorin as my main OS replacing Windows, and not a single one has come even close to the ease of the Zorin experience. Sure, there are rough spots - permissions on my hard drives and even local partitions drive me insane - but overall Zorin is without doubt (in my experience) the best distro introduction to Linuxworld. People who proclaim disappointment are approaching it with the wrong mindset. In my humble opinion.
I don't know... I find that 18 is as good as 16 or 17.3 while any of these are much better in the "feeling at home" department than most "Linux distros"
Even I can understand that we need a way out of Ubuntu and GNOME, but heck, I just hope that if Zorin goes KDE Plasma they would not make us suffer that transition. I would take Zorin Connect any time!
Even though I know I am an illiterate person regarding distros, I sincerely hope we go full Debian! (No Tropic Thunder pun intended).
He's free to do whatever he wishes. But would-be Linux users should probably ignore him.
I also doubt a large part of his following, who are hardcore PC fans (with many gamers) are even considering switching to Linux.
While he does hurt a little bit (what with his massive influence), I don't think anyone seriously using/considering Linux should take him that seriously. After all, most of the time, non-enthusiasts taking a go at Linux (and doing so publicly without much research) are just making an entertainment video.
Ignored and ignored.
There’s a whole aspect that is being missed here, and that is, while admittedly entertainment is a large part of the series, a lot of “hard-core fans” really DO want to escape Windows! So many talk about how Windows just keeps getting in their way and has become almost unusable that they’re desperate for a VIABLE alternative, which includes being able to play their favourite games.
Linus has explained, more than once, that while he COULD have asked for expert advice from experienced Linux users, that was not the path he felt able to take. The whole point was that he, Luke and Elijah undertook an experiment as Windows and Microslop refugees, using the tools that are available to normal people like me. So, just like Linus, I did various installs of Mint, due to “knows issues”. I also had to fresh installations of Zorin_OS, also due to “known issues”. Does that make me stupid too?
When I first delved into the mysterious world of Linux I had no one to guide me. I had memories of my ex / late husband using it, us talking about it and it sounding way too complicated for me to even consider. Then a few years ago I started to do some research and I discovered Mint, Cinnamon. The experience was bad. I had a few issues, a kernel update broke my system, but I still tried again and reinstalled it, but the Mint community were so arrogant and unapproachable that I searched again. I made a bootable USB and downloaded Zorin_OS 17, and POP!_OS. Yes, really, POP_OS because it came highly recommended on YouTube channels and internet searches, and wasn’t Mint!
What Linus is doing is an authentic experience. The failure with POP!_OS reflects what many users experience. I tried different versions of Mint and suffered several “known glitches” before I finally heard of Zorin_OS, and here I still am.
Unfortunately, I still can’t fully leave Windows behind. There are things I need for my job that only function on Windows, and I even bought a new Dell laptop last Black Friday because I had to run Windows 11. This is just a reality for a lot of “normal people”. Linus has talked about the different distributions he is using at the moment, and POP_OS isn’t the only one. LTT’s Techquickie released a new video for “Windows Refugees” on which Linux OS’s are the easiest to transition to and ZORIN_OS is NUMBER 2 after Mint!
To sum up, you Linux Gurus do not know just what you know (vast knowledge), and we noobies don’t know what we don’t know. Stop judging without all the information.
So, Part 2 of the Journey is published and it seems to be a bit rough for 2 of the Trio:
Oh, so they changed the original thumbnail, which had read: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" Luke, Linus & Elijah. ![]()
I do like these videos, they explain a lot for noobies (like me) and people who want to game on Linux. Also, I think Luke has run into the same issues I had with the Linux-Mint community. As I've mentioned before it was THEY - the community on the forum - who drove me away from Mint. I didn't give up easily and I tried fresh installations but I couldn't get the explanations I needed to keep using it.
The community here: you guys, are exceptional, and the reason I'm still using Zorin_OS on three machines. Your patience and support makes a massive difference to new users.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series... will Linus break his curse?
Or will break the Machine first?
So, I don't usually watch "reacts" but Chris Titus has literally saved my butt, taught me SO MUCH, and I know he is controversial... I find his honesty refreshing:
I tried MINT 3 times and Zorin a couple too... am I stupid?
I think some posts I was replying to have been removed. I still think my comment is valid though.
Distros develop over time. Is it stupid to re-try... ? No! I don't think any Linux distro would exist if users didn't keep trying. It is a part of being human... it is evolution... keep trying, making changes and one day it will work... hopefully... but one thing is sure: if you stop trying nothing and no one will ever succeed.
