Try launch Files via terminal next time. It might tell us what's going on.
If I remember correct the command is:
nautilusThere was an error
What was the error? Did it state what it was? Might be worth checking the status of your hard drive. Launch Disks, then under tools, run a S.M.A.R.T. disk check to see if there are issues with your hard drive.
