Fingerprint sensor detected but unavailable on HP 250R G10 โ€“ ELAN 04f3:0c8e

Hello Zorin OS team and community,

I am using Zorin OS 18.1 on an HP 250R G10 laptop. My laptop has a built-in fingerprint sensor, but I cannot add or enroll a fingerprint in Zorin OS.

The fingerprint hardware is detected correctly by USB:

$ lsusb | grep -i -E 'elan|fingerprint'

Bus 003 Device 004: ID 04f3:0c8e Elan Microelectronics Corp. ELAN:ARM-M4

However, when I try to enroll a fingerprint with fprintd, I get:

$ fprintd-enroll

Impossible to enroll: GDBus.Error:net.reactivated.Fprint.Error.NoSuchDevice: No devices available
System information
Laptop: HP 250R G10
Operating system: Zorin OS 18.1
Fingerprint manufacturer: ELAN Microelectronics Corp.
Fingerprint device: ELAN
USB ID: 04f3:0c8e
Problem

The fingerprint sensor is physically present and detected by Linux through USB, but it is not recognized as an available fingerprint device by fprintd.

As a result, I cannot enroll a fingerprint or use fingerprint login in Zorin OS.

Request

Could Zorin OS developers please consider adding support for the ELAN 04f3:0c8e (ELAN) fingerprint sensor, either through libfprint or another appropriate Linux driver?

I would be happy to provide additional hardware information, logs, or test packages if they would help with adding support for this device.

Thank you for your work on Zorin OS and for considering better support for this fingerprint reader.

Hello and welcome,
A possible solution could be found here

and here

So try that

sudo apt update
sudo apt install \
  git build-essential meson ninja-build \
  libglib2.0-dev libgusb-dev libgirepository1.0-dev \
  libpixman-1-dev libnss3-dev libgudev-1.0-dev \
  gtk-doc-tools

Then clone and build the experimental branch:

git clone https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/depau/libfprint.git
cd libfprint
git switch elanmoc2
meson setup builddir
ninja -C builddir
sudo ninja -C builddir install
sudo ldconfig
sudo systemctl restart fprintd

Test it:

fprintd-list "$USER"
fprintd-enroll

04f3:0c8e is an elan match-on-chip reader. a lot of those still arent in the libfprint build zorin ships.

try:

  1. fprintd-list-devices
  2. open Settings โ†’ Users โ†’ Fingerprint and watch journalctl -u fprintd -b -f
  3. if list-devices is empty, stock fprintd cant enroll it yet

nearby elan MoC ids got drivers in newer libfprint. 0c8e may need building libfprint from current git, then systemctl restart fprintd. if it still doesnt show up after that, its unsupported hardware for now, not a settings miss.
