Firmware / BIOS updates appear to never finish

Hello, :waving_hand:

I have encountered a recurring issue with firmware / BIOS updates offered through Zorin OS’s Update application.

The updates are correctly detected and installation begins normally, but the process does not always complete properly from the user interface. I have experienced two different cases:

Example 1 — Screenshots 1-1 and 1-2
“20250902 Secure Boot dbx”
“2023 → Secure Boot Signature Database”

IMAGES

The updates appeared to download successfully.

At the end of the process, the Update application asked whether I wanted to restart the computer. I selected “Yes,” but nothing happened: the computer did not restart, and the application remained stuck. I eventually had to restart the computer manually.

After the manual restart, the updates appeared to have been installed successfully.

Example 2 — Screenshot 2-1
“20260402 - Secure Boot dbx”

IMAGES

In this case, the Update application remained indefinitely stuck on the installation screen, with no completion message and no restart prompt.

After waiting for approximately 20 minutes, I force-restarted the computer. Once the system had restarted, the update appeared to have been installed successfully.

However, because the Update application never clearly confirms that the process has completed, I cannot determine whether the firmware update was fully applied before restarting the computer.

These kinds of issues has occurred with all firmware updates I have installed through the Update application.

Is this a known thing ?

Thank you.

Devices that have been updated successfully:
• System Firmware (1.35.1 → 1.36.0)
• UEFI CA (2011 → 2023)
• UEFI dbx (20230501 → 20250902)
Uploading firmware reports helps hardware vendors to quickly identify failing and successful updates on real devices.

So, You made that over Gnome Software. Did You tried to update it with sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade via Terminal? It would show further Output when there are Errors.

I was looking for a answer and a solution because I too have the same issue. I updated my bios with the manufacturer bios update which got the secure boot update. I'm not too tech savy with this secure boot nonsense, I have not followed the advice in the link I'm posting below. Let us know if that worked out for you!

Hello, :waving_hand:

I looked into your suggested solution !

It appears that the user in the referenced thread resolved the issue by clearing the Secure Boot keys, after which the error no longer occurred.

Maybe I should try this as well.

I know the Arch wiki documented some ThinkPad BIOS versions where trying to clear boot keys bricks the laptop motherboard so that is a pain in the butt. Be sure to check there isn't a good reason why the dbx install fails or aborts before trying too hard fixing something that probably isn't too much of a hindrance. I get it is annoying to see it in the software updater all the time and I would feel nicer about my machine not having long published security holes but I like it better to not brick it when I don't feel confident about undoing my tinkering.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s (AMD) Gen 1 - ArchWiki as an example (the ThinkPad I ended up getting doesn't seem to have this problem but the dbx updates stall out all the same lol.) Also some models alow you to replace the firmware with Coreboot or Libreboot which can be a good way to un-screw-up secureboot. Be sure to check your specific motherboard/laptop model by searching everywhere online before touching secureboot when you are already booting into your desired OS.

I had given up on this months ago because in the software updates, the secure dbx configuration update just constantly hanged without any installation.

Today I decided to check out updates, and it finally installed once and for all. How strange and surprising. :exclamation_question_mark:

Hello,

I did some more troubleshooting with ChatGPT, and I think I now have a clearer picture of what is actually happening. :slightly_smiling_face:

The problem does not seem to be that BIOS/firmware updates never "finish" in general.

1. PREVIOUS SUCCESSFUL UPDATES

Below are several previous firmware updates that were successfully installed:

fwupdmgr get-history

System Firmware:
1.35.1 -> 1.36.0
Update State: Success

UEFI CA:
2011 -> 2023
Update State: Success

UEFI dbx:
20230501 -> 20250902
Update State: Success

So the previous BIOS update and previous Secure Boot updates did actually complete successfully.

2. CURRENT ISSUE

The current problem seems to be specifically related to the newer Secure Boot dbx update from 20250902 to 20260402.

fwupdmgr get-devices now reports:

fwupdmgr get-devices

UEFI dbx
Current version: 20250902

Update Error:
Not enough efivarfs space, requested 30.7 kB and got 13.9 kB

fwupdmgr get-updates confirms that 20260402 is still being offered, so it has not actually been installed.

I then checked the EFI variable storage:

df -h /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use%
efivarfs 148K 135K 8.6K 95%

So the EFI variable storage is almost full.

From what I understand, this is not related to free space on the SSD or the EFI System Partition.

efivarfs represents the small non-volatile UEFI variable storage managed by the firmware itself.

Additional EFI/NVRAM checks

There are currently 157 EFI variables, and the largest ones include:

Largest EFI variables

23120 dbx
10455 dbDefault
6982 db
5070 KEKDefault
3728 dbxDefault
1564 KEK

There are also 48 variables named V1P*, using 12480 bytes in total.

I grouped the variables by GUID, and the three largest groups are:

Variables / By GUID

30102 bytes 2 variables d719b2cb-3d3a-4596-a3bc-dad00e67656f
23564 bytes 27 variables 8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c
12480 bytes 48 variables 01bd3876-1ad6-4e59-b39a-7a0b1bde20ac

The first group contains the current Secure Boot db / dbx databases, while the second contains standard UEFI variables, including several Secure Boot defaults.

I also checked the UEFI boot entries:

sudo efibootmgr -v

Boot0004 EFI PXE IPv4
Boot0005 EFI PXE IPv6

So this does not appear to be caused by dozens of old or stale BootXXXX entries.

Another interesting detail is that if I add the sizes of all currently visible files in /sys/firmware/efi/efivars, I only get :

75153 bytes
73.4 KiB

while df reports around 135 KiB used.

From what I understand, these two numbers are not necessarily supposed to match exactly, because df reflects the firmware's EFI variable-store accounting rather than simply adding the sizes of the files currently exposed through efivarfs.

I also found a recent fwupd issue that looks extremely similar to my case:

UEFI dbx/db/KEK updates fail with “Not enough efivarfs space” on Lenovo 83HN / Ryzen AI 9 365 · Issue #10635 · fwupd/fwupd · GitHub

It involves:

  • approximately 148 KiB total efivarfs storage
  • current dbx version 20250902
  • offered update 20260402
  • around 30.7 kB required
  • only a small amount of space available
  • no large number of stale boot entries

So at this point, it seems that the original "update never finishes" behaviour was probably just the visible symptom.

The actual underlying issue appears to be:

The Dell firmware exposes a very small EFI/NVRAM variable store, it is now almost full, and there is no longer enough free space for fwupd to write the newer Secure Boot dbx database.

@Jabokoe The newer dbx itself is also a legitimate Secure Boot security update, so I would rather not simply ignore it or disable Secure Boot just to make the warning disappear.

I have not deleted any EFI variables manually, because deleting unknown firmware variables can potentially cause boot or firmware problems.

For reference, all available Zorin OS updates are installed as of the time I am posting this message.

3. NEXT STEPS

I am currently considering:

  • Updating the Dell BIOS from 1.36.0 to the newer version currently available from Dell (1.37.0) using the flash method (USB stick), then checking whether the available efivarfs space changes.

  • If necessary, loading the BIOS defaults afterwards, since I found a fwupd discussion where a maintainer mentioned that resetting BIOS defaults can sometimes free some EFI variable space.

  • @thor I could also clear the Secure Boot keys, then restore the factory/default keys afterwards. This may free some EFI variable space, and fwupd documentation mentions a Secure Boot key factory reset as a possible workaround.
However, as @jabokoe pointed out, this is a more sensitive operation, so I would rather treat it as a last resort.

Does this diagnosis look correct to you?

And more specifically, does anyone know if there is a safe Dell-specific way to reclaim or reorganize EFI variable/NVRAM space, without manually deleting variables or resetting Secure Boot keys?

I wish I can provide you input but it's an area I greatly lack knowledge on.

I don't use secure boot or Win 11. I did update my Bios last year with the secure boot certificates, and thought to myself set and forget it.

Ever since I installed Zorin 17 I abandoned Win 10&11.
