If you are using a CD-ROM drive you will never be able to burn a DVD! Ypu need a DVD-RW drive to do this.

Just to add K3b is a great piece of software as it automatically generates an md5 checksum when burning .isos, although most distros these days use SHA checkdums. So make sure to install GtkHash application. I found that righthclicking an .iso to burn using Brasero would create instant coasters. You always have to launch Brasero first before burning.
