Free replacement for the paid PDF and photo tools people miss after leaving Windows

Hi everyone, I am Aniruddha. A lot of friends who move from Windows to Linux ask me the same thing: what do I use now to merge a PDF, sign a form, compress photos or convert a video, without paying or uploading private files?

I built OpenFile as one answer. It is a free, open source (MIT) site with 360+ tools for PDF, images, video, audio, archives, fonts and more. It runs completely in the browser with WebAssembly, so nothing is uploaded and there is no account or watermark. You can install it from the browser as an offline app, and it opens fine on Zorin with Firefox or Chromium.

If you tried it, I would like to know what you could not find, which tool felt slow, and what you still keep a Windows app for. I will read every reply.

In answer to some of your questions,

pdf Arranger - for rearranging pages and merging pdfs.

For video conversion, winff.

For compression of photos, @Nourpon 's Odysseus File Manager.

For signing a pdf you could use DjView4, export to postscript or TIFF then convert back to pdf.

My PDF tools in Odysseus

  • Compress with Ghostscript: real page-by-page progress, before/after sizes, original kept if smaller.
  • Merge in any order, with page ranges per file (1-3,7,10-).
  • Watermark: vector text or image, nine positions or tiled, opacity, angle, pages, live preview, optional flattening so the watermark cannot be removed.
  • Pages: extract, delete, rotate or split pages, with thumbnails.
