Freeze/Kernel Panic on Zorin 18 (no Wayland problem!)

Hi there,

[EDIT] After some time using Zorin with X11 I actually faced the graphics freeze again. So it isn't a Wayland issue :frowning:

I've been using Zorin Core for a month or more and was quite happy. I admit I didn't heavily use the Laptop, but for sure I had no issues.

Since I liked Zorin I purchased Zorin Pro and upgrade, presumably this upgrade also installed Zorin 18?

Now I frequently run into kernel freeze or system freeze after a few minutes uptime. Sometimes there's a pink screen with kernel freeze, sometimes the system just hangs after a small graphic hickup. Only a hard reset works after either of the issues.

Reading several posts here I tried booting into Kernel 6.14 again but this had a freeze as well.
Also, I installed the broadcom DKMS package as recommended in one of the posts, this didn't make a difference.
Then I switched to X11 as also suggested, this solved all issues which is great.

But, I have several questions:

  • It seems that under X11 the UI behaves a little more stuttering. For example when minimizing/maximizing windows it isn't not that smooth as on Wayland. Is this known? Any chance this can be configured?
  • Is there a setting that allows Wayland to be used but the crashes don't happen? Or is the only solution to completely switch to X11? I believe it was working nicely before I upgraded to Zorin Pro / 18.
  • How can I actually select the kernel version? At boot there is only the Zorin logo but no chance to select another kernel (not sure how I once did it :-))

Thanks for any help.
Thomas.

Welcome to the Forum!

  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • If Windows is installed: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
  • Could you please post the Output of the Commands sudo lshw -C network and rfkill list please?

Thanks for your response. Here's my feedback:

  • Secure Boot was disabled

  • Fast Boot I think is called "Quick" in Lenovo BIOS? It was on Quick and I changed it now to "Diagnostics". Please see attached sceenshot if this is the correct setting?

  • Windows is not installed on the laptop. I only boot Windows sometimes through an external USB SDD. I am not sure Fast Start-up is disabled there.

Below is the output from the two commands:

No, this isn't what I meant but maybe Your BIOS doesn't have this Option.

You need an active GRUB Menu. You can get it with pressing Esc or the left shift Key during Start-Up but it can be that it doesn't work.

But You can activate it. Open the Terminal and type sudo nano /ect/default/grub and You can edit the GRUB Config File. There is a white Textblock:

You have to change the Lines 2 and 3 to:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu

and

GRUB_TIMEOUT=20

The last one makes that the GRUB Menu appears 20 Seconds. If that shouldn't be enough Time for You, You can increase it if you want with a higher Number.

When You have done the Changes press ctrl+o to save, Enter to confirm and ctrl+x to exit. Back in the normal Terminal Overview type sudo update-grub to make the Changes affect. Don't forget that! Without it, it will not work.

When You then reboot, You should get the GRUB Menu. choose there ''Advanced Options'' and then choose the Option with the 6.14 Kernel.

But You don't have a Broadcom Chip as far as I can see. Was this offered on the ''Additional Drivers'' Tab in Software & Updates?

I've now been able to boot into the previous kernel but still get a freeze / kernel panic there.

So to summarize:

* Fatal issue with kernel 6.14 and 6.17
* Fatal issue with Wayland and Xorg

"Fatal issue" can be described as this:

- Usually it happens 1 - 5 minutes after boot.
- Sometimes the pink kernel panic screen appears.
- Sometimes the GUI including mouse cursor freezes.
- Sometimes the GUI freezes while the mouse can still be moved but no clicking or keyboard reaction.

In all cases only a hard reset helps to bring the laptop back to life.

As a result, Zorin is not usable for me :frowning:

Anything else I can provide or try to solve this?

Thanks!

Maybe You will not like what I now ask but I do it: Would You try it with a fresh Installation?

Hehe, actually that's OK because this laptop was not used heavily yet and there's no data on it. So I'm OK doing a fresh install.

Will let you know how this goes.

Thanks!

OK, done. Formatted SSD and installed fresh Zorin 18 Pro with minimal packages. I'll see how it goes and will let you know.

Just had freeze again :frowning:

Any other idea or logs I can provide?

What is the brand/model of your computer? What are the specs?

BTW; just a side note: While writing the latest ISO Image to my USB drive I realized that I already had v18 on it and installed on this laptop. So my upgrade was not from 17 to 18 Pro as I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, but most likely from 18 to 18 Pro.
Anyway, I had not much used Zorin on this laptop prior to upgrading to 18 Pro, but definitely played some Windows Games (wine/lutris) on it for a few hours without issues.

Okay, could You post Your Hardware Specs? I mean CPU, GPU, RAM etc.

Hmm ... Normally, I would suggest to switch to X11/Xorg now but You already ahd used that ...

There would be the Option to try it with a newer Kernel. Maybe it offers better Hardware Support. You could try that. Instructions for installing a newer Kernel, You can find here:

OK, I didn't try Xorg after the fresh installation yet. I will do this now.

If I get a freeze or kernel panic again, I'll try the later kernel path.

Thanks, I will let you know.

Just in case I post the last boot messages before kernel panic from the journal P4 and P3 only. Not sure this is of any help.
