I am new to Zorin and having trouble with one thing. I often need to access files on a remote server over ftp. I am able to connect to the server and browse directories without trouble, but I cannot open any files. What I really want to do (and can in my Manjaro and LinuxMint installations) is open files in Atom or Visual Studio Code in order to edit simple code. When I try to open a file in VSC, I get an error message saying that the file cannot be read. Help?
Hi and welcome to the forum 
It sounds like a Flatpak/Snap issue.
If you install your apps in either of those format you cannot access any remote files. It is because of sandboxing nature of those format.
Could you please verify that you installed those apps from the regular repository?
