Graphics issue

Hey all, hope you're doing good. I'm new to Linux and I've no knowledge in code and the likes. I didn't want to use Windows, which led me to ZorinOS.

I installed following the steps that were on the site, I can't change the screen res, brightness, frequency, and the Night Light feature straight up doesn't work. I would really appreciate any help thrown my way, but please bear with me as I'm not a tech savvy individual.

oh, and the screen won't shut off when I put down the screen for some reason.

Welcome to the Forum!

One Question for the Beginning: Do You have installed Zorin Core or Zorin Lite? It would be nice if You could add that to Your User Profile.

Until the Answer, I would name some common Things:

  • Disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot in Your BIOS
  • If Windows should still be installed: disable Fast Start-Up in Windows.
  • Did You checked the Checksum of the Zorin ISO?
  • In Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
  • What Tool did You use to create the bootable USB Stick with Zorin on it?
  • Could You post Your Hardware Specs, Brand/Model of Your Laptop?

Hey there, sorry for replying late. I’m using Zorin Core, Windows isn’t installed, I didn’t check the checksum as of yet, I’m not sure and I’ve no idea on how to check. I used an external ssd to install Zorin.

My Laptop is the Framework 13 AMD Ryzen AI 7 370

Again I’m really sorry about the late reply

Hello Moody, Zorin OS 18 is going to be released on the 14th of this month, you may want to wait till then, before you do much else. You could use Popsicle, to burn OS 18 image to the external drive.

I say this, because OS 18 will be more current, and Framework notebooks are so new, they only been around a couple years now, you may find better support through 18. Also, your 18 will get a longer period of support plus security updates.

Thats my recommendation. And I don't blame you for not liking Windows, Windows 11 has been by far, the worst, out of all Windows OS's.

PS: Its likely OS 18 will solve your graphics issue as well, 6.14 kernel and beyond, should have your AMD GPU covered. My Two Cents.

Here You can see how to check the checksum of the ISO:

That is a relatively new CPU. My Guess would be that You need a newer Kernel for it. Like @StarTreker already wrote: Zorin 18 knocks on the Door. And this will have a newer Kernel. You should try it with this.

But I could imagine that even this Kernel could be not new enough. So, You would have to install a newer Kernel. Instructions are here:

I would suggest to try it with the Mainline Tool and use there the newest stable Kernel. Should be 6.17.

Hello again, so I checked the checksum of the iso and everything seems in order. I also see that Zorin 18 is out so I have that downloading at the moment. I'll see if that works, I'll update the kernel if not as you suggested, and if that doesn't work... I'll update ya on it I guess.

So far things seem to be working normally, I am still trying to replicate one last issue that I have been struggling with, that is frequent freezes where nothing on the screen can be interacted with and the cursor is the only thing that can move.

Edit: Yep, screen still freezes. However it almost immediately kicked in when I unplugged the laptop from its charger.

Edit 2: It also freezes when I open apps like Obsidian and Libreoffice. While still unplugged from the charger.

How old is your notebooks battery? What you are describing, is sumular to modern cars. If tye battwry voltage gets too low, cause battery cant hold a charge, everything malfunctions in a modern car.

On a notebook, safety protection BMS circuit, will shut your computer down to protect from damage. If your battery is 5 years old, probably time to buy a new one.

If your notebook acts normal when plugged in, i suggest keeping it plugged in for now.

According to the terminal, it should be about 6 months old. I also managed to triggering the freeze via putting the device to sleep by bringing the screen down and then running Brave. I also figured a pseudo solution to the freeze that sometimes works and sometimes no, it's by pressing ctrl+fn+alt+f1 which takes me to the log in screen, the screen would unfreeze when I log back in sometimes.

Edit: I should also add that brave the app just froze. Only the app, and I unfroze it by trying to force quit it which triggered the "Are you sure you want to close all tabs" pop up

Edit 2: I just remembered that this issue also occurs on other distros as well, so StarTreker might be right and that it could be a hardware thing.
