Hello guys,
Minutes ago, my entire HDD partition has gone for no reason. I was copying a file... and then all data vanished.
Is it a way to recover the partition or ... ?
I think the only way of trying to get data back would be to use TestDisk. If however you saved snapshots of your system with Timeshift, you could get it back by using an OS that has Timeshift in the live .iso such as Linux Mint or PCLinuxOS. To check if it is a hard drive failure, run Zorin in live mode, run Disks and then use the SMART test utility. I would use the brief one not the extensive option.
Just done some research and GPaarted can do it which is present in live .iso of Zorin:
I couldn't do anything for the HDD, anyway I resized the partition and delete that partition and I have one 6Tb partition.
I have one question, till yesterday my HDD had 34 bad sectors, today after failure it becomes to 35 bad sectors, I format that partition and I have only one bad sector.
Do I have to worry about this one bad sector, or is it normal after 10 years of using the HDD?
Bad sectors may happen from time to time but this is a clear sign that it's showing its age. Keep in mind that all drives fail, eventually, and quite often they do so without giving any signs of malfunctioning. Now that you know, you can start copying the data to another drive that will eventually replace this one.
I would recommend keeping multiple copies around at all times. Two drives failing at once is unlikely — and unlucky — but you do not want to be in that position. Ideally, follow the 3-2-1 rule as a backup strategy.
I revently had an old Western Digital drive manufavtured in 2009 die. Western digital normally come with a 5-year warranty. The thing with warranties though is you have to pay postage and the replacement is usually a refurb one not a brand new one.
Thank you guys,
I know I have to replace my HDDs with new ones, anyway I didn't have important data on that partition, I had this problem before, my two WD HDDs failed because of power supply at once.
I have to buy a NAS device this time...
