HDR support in GnuLinux

Pleaseeeeeeee HDR update. That's the only thing holding this back from being the perfect distro

My monitors are too old to have any HDR support, although my TV has HDR. To be frank, yes there's a difference, but not enough for me to consider that as a deciding factor on what OS serves my needs best.

I do understand, however, that for the most part I live way behind when it comes to adopting new things, so take my opinions with the grains of salt they deserve. Maybe Himalayan salt, make it a little more exotic.

HDR Support is a Thing of the Gnome Desktop. That comes with a later Gnome Version. I think Debian 13 with Gnome 48 has already HDR Support and Settings for it.

For Zorin, this should be available with Zorin 19 with a newer Gnome Base.

HDR support is largely the desktop environment's job. I'm seeing that Zorin 18 uses GNOME 46 (with customizations). Having dropped Zorin personally, I can't check that. GNOME added HDR support in GNOME 48. I will note that if your purpose is gaming, the distro/DE having HDR support won't automatically make games work in HDR. I've tried with KDE 6 (which also supports HDR) on other distros, and the games I run via Proton don't seem to get it. The only easy way to use HDR for games on Linux, to my knowledge, is a Steam Deck. It may be possible using gamescope, but how is beyond me.

If your purpose for HDR is not games, then I honestly don't know where the situation stands for you at the moment.

Back when I was on Cachy, HDR worked especially well in Brave. Looked perfect. With games, I used the Linux reshade script and some commandline args to get HDR looking less washed out, but I'm not sure to what extent it was true HDR. Looked damn good though, especially in Dying Light and TLOU. Ghost of Tsushima hated it no matter what I did, and RDR 2 never worked.

It's my recollection that ReShade isn't real HDR, but it does shader injections to replace more efficient shaders with more complex, better ones. Or cel-shaded looking ones, or even ASCII. But yes, HDR on the desktop tends to work nicely on DEs that support it. Actually setting HDR in the game's display or video options is where things generally don't work out in my experience.

If it is gaming you are after then I believe Bazzite might be the OS for you. The iso is over 8 Gb and does not work with Ventoy. I am no gamer but curious to see what it is like using gnome-multi-writer.

The game was set to HDR in its settings, I just used reshade to make it less washed out. It wasn't one of the SDR to HDR reshade things. I just adjusted the basic exposure, saturation, contrast, dark/light levels, etc. Windows HDR kinda sucked with gaming too tbh, I remember lots of games where I'd just opt to not use it.

I didn't like Bazzite because of the immutable design. VPNs are a pain to install and I like tinkering, lol

I have installed it as a VM and it is not an easy distribution to get your head round, probably because I am not a heavy gamer. The other issue is it is based on RedHat/Fedora which I have never taken a liking too. Plus Flatpak is embedded. It will be deleted.

Yesterday I also decided to look at AlmaLinux because it is keeping xorg until 2032. Again another rpm based distro. I cancelled the last two downloads from completing, and deleted the first one after reading more about it on its announcements page.

Finally I wanted to test the latest release from Devuan, 6.1.1, but the VM failed to reboot after install. It could have been a wrong setting in machine details.

I started to make a video about LMDE 7 yesterday but had to abandon it as I was getting a flickering mouse. Why? Because I set the graphics to VGA when I should have left the default at Virtio!

Huh. Now that's interesting. Everything I've tried has left the HDR setting disabled in games.

This is the generic HDR launch command I used to enable it, works in all games except RDR 2. RDR's HDR was finicky on Windows too, requires absolute full screen there, any interruption sent it back to SDR.

PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 DXVK_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%

And usually the reshade tool will provde a DLL override to add too so that would have to be added too, for example:

If reshade wants this:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3dcompiler_47=n;dxgi=n,b"

The full commandline arg would be something like this:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3dcompiler_47=n;dxgi=n,b" PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 DXVK_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%

Also, if you're sailing the high seas on Lutris, you'd have to use "environment variables" under system options in the configure menu for the game. For the command:

PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1

PROTON_ENABLE_HDR would be under the "Key" side of the table, and 1 would be under the value side. Same goes for any command with an equal sign.

I have never had Lutris cooperate satisfactorily with me. Outside of Steam, I use Bottles and Heroic, mostly Bottles.

Also, Lutris doesn't like paths with spaces. Learned that recently, lol.
