Help for resolving a glitch

Hi, I’m currently having a glitch on my computer. (I’m french so my english is not always perfect)

This is the glitch.

It happens very randomly, once or twice every minutes, and last from 5 to 20 seconds every time. Sometimes it continues with some softwares opened (like the terminal) and sometimes it completly stops with others like Pycharm.

I already had this problem before and I reinstalled Zorin on my PC but the problem still remains.

Hi Landrik7, I'm sorry you are having this issue. It looks like a RAM or driver issue. Do you know the model of your GPU? In the output, it only lists as a generic Intel chip with the i915 driver (This may be the wrong driver for your card). Knowing the model, we can offer an alternative driver and help you blacklist the current one.

If you have it available, you can download it if you don't, try booting to memtest and checking both the 8GB System RAM and the RAM available on the GPU.

I really do think it is using the wrong driver though (there are absolutely no details about the GPU, which is odd if it is the correct driver....RAM, Model and capabilities should be shown here).

I was on, so figured I'd help as much as I could.

Would you provide the output of lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

I imagine it will be the same as what you mentioned, but may clarify something.

Have you checked your motherboard manufacturer's website for any bios updates?

Aha not at all… I did knew that it was even possible…

I would check for any bios updates (which can effect onboard graphics), in the support tab for your model of MB/Laptop. Should offer downloads for bios, software, drivers (windows only).

But we can also add the latest intel drivers, not saying it will help, but may resolve your issue.

In fact there is a new BIOS upgrade since september of this year ! I’ll give it a try and update my BIOS

If that does not resolve it, come back and we will try newer drivers.

Please be careful when doing the bios update. Do not allow anything to interrupt it, it will be hell to get things back to normal if it is interrupted.

Don't be frightened, but it is one of those things that you leave the machine alone until its finished.

Well, I have upgraded my BIOS, but the glitch still remains unfortunatly…

OK, we can attempt to update the drivers then....

in the terminal (yes, you will be using this regularly), type:

sudo apt install -y gpg-agent wget

wget -qO - https://repositories.intel.com/graphics/intel-graphics.key | sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb [arch=amd64] https://repositories.intel.com/graphics/ubuntu focal main'

Each command individually. The first ensures gpg-agent and wget are installed and up to date.

The wget downloads the key for you to be able to access the repository.

the apt-add-repository adds the repository so that you can access the packages available.

Then we have to update apt so it knows that more is available to it...

sudo apt update && apt list -u && sudo apt upgrade -y

This will update the repository list, polling the new repo for what is available, then shows the list of updates available for the packages installed on your system (if it lists i915, you may not have to do the next step). Finally it installs any available update with the "yes" (-y) flag. If you want, you can remove the last sudo command so that you can review what will be changed, and run it separately.

To copy and paste in the terminal, use shift with the common ctrl + c/v keyboard shortcuts. So copy will be ctrl + shift + c and paste will be ctrl + shift + v in the terminal. Outside of the terminal, the normal combinations ctrl + c/v apply.

Finally, if it hasn't updated already, type:

sudo apt install -y intel-opencl-icd intel-level-zero-gpu level-zero intel-media-va-driver-non-free libmfx1

The repository and key may have been removed...or you may not need a key anymore...try adding the repository anyway...see where that goes.

if it doesn't find the repo, we can go another route:

In terminal:
sudo apt install -y xserver-xorg-video-intel mesa-utils

It may just be the mesa-utils missing, as the i915 driver is already in use.

Afterward, still run the sudo apt update && apt list -u && sudo apt upgrade -y

As you can see, nothing in Linux is guaranteed, but the process of troubleshooting is rather simple...

  • identify the component/hardware
  • research issues/drivers online (do not settle on just one, but read multiple topics before proceeding)
  • attempt a resolution
  • depending on outcome, repeat

This is always the process used, here, stack overflow, ubuntu forums....
I went with updating the driver before attempting the mesa support, as the mesa support may have been in the update. Since the key/repository is not available, ensuring xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed and up to date as well as the mesa-utils, this should resolve your issue. If it doesn't, definitely download memtest and run it on the GPU. The card or the RAM may be failing.

I found, that there is a bug in the older intel drivers that cause screen artifacts similar to yours. You can also try, if the above hasn't worked, the solution here. As stated in the solution, backup or make an image prior to proceeding. You may have to run software updater to download the latest intel driver (other tab) after performing the resolution as you may be on the x11 generic driver at that time.

To backup the mentioned file:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf.bak

This copies the file to the same directory, but with the .bak added to the filename. This way, when you run the sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf there will still be a copy of it.
If an issue occurs because of the removal of this file, you can restore it with:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

This restores the file by renaming the existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf.bak to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf.
