I joined the forum a few days ago and I'm now getting a huge amount of emails. I thought I'd set it to get only replies to topics I'd subscribed to or posted to but that doesn't seem to be the case. The forum layout is not very intuitive and though I've made some changes, the emails just keep coming. How do I change my notification settings so I'm not getting every new topic and reply?
If you go to your profile preferences (top right corner, your user icon), you should be able to then go and change either notification preferences or email preferences:
I am not seeing that menu. This is what I see when I click on the hamburger menu or my user icon.

Click on the Person icon (from your 2nd screenshot), select preferences. Then tab thru the options. Emails, Notifications, etc..

First, You click on Your Profile (1), then on the Person Icon (2) and then on Summary (3).
Then You click on Settings (1), then E-Mails (2), set up Your Mail-settings and then click on Save Changes (3). Don't forget the last One!
I think I've got the preferences figured out. One more question: When I click on the user icon, it shows me a list of threads. Is that a default or is that affected by my preferences?
Those I believe are the latest post (threads) that you have participated in the forum.
I don't think so. Most of what I'm seeing I've never seen before, definitely not read nor participated in.
Take a look at settings > +track and turn of
"Automatically track viewed topics"
and make sure that no categories or keywords are selected at
observed, persecuted, watch first post..
Well, I had Tutorials and Guides selected, but was getting all kinds of emails. Turned it off. Now I'll watch.
This should actually not be. But you can't rely on the Discourse forum software - it shows some things that aren't true. It's buggy.
That is normally an Activities Overview where you can see that People have liked, commented/reacted on Your Comments or Threads.
The Bell could mean that the Live Notifications are active. You can check that in the Settings what I ahve shown above. It is right beneath the Mail Settings:
I've turned off all notifications of any type except for my own posts or replies.

Yes, the only notifications I get now are replies to my posts.
