How Do You Properly Disconnect USB Camera

I have an cheap digital camera I use for photos. I connect it to my PC via a USB cable.

My question: What is the proper method for disconnecting prior to physical removal of the USB plug from the PC in Zorin 17.3.

I have used the following:

  • From Thunar >>> right click camera picture directory and then click "Safely Remove" -- I think that works but not sure if it is actually safely removing
  • From Thunar >>> right click camera picture directory and then click "Unmount" -- I think that also works but not sure if it is actually safely unmounting
  • From Xfce terminal >>> issue the umount command, but upon further review I think this is wrong because the system may still be accessing the camera files, plus I get not properly unmounted messages when I check dmesg (sorry, lost my recent dmesg history after reboot otherwise I would post actual dmesg output)

So, thoughts -- instructions -- what's the correct method?

That should be fine. I mean, it is called ''Safely Remove''. That should end the Processes and then You can unplug the Camera.

Let me give that a shot again and see if anything weird pops up in dmesg.

The overall issue I was having relates to the camera not being able to mount sometimes which I was was thinking might be related to improperly unmounting or removing.

Thanks

Still having issues with this camera...I'm thinking the "Safely Disconnect" from the Thunar might not be actually safely doing it's thing.

Anywho, below is dmesg after camera connected and then bombed out (i.e. automatically disconnected itself or was disconnected by Zorin). Hopefully all this means something to a brighter mind then mine.

Everything below happened in a matter of about 2-3 seconds, I just plugged in the camera, received the pop-up menu on the camera LCD screen to select MASS STORAGE or PC CAMERA or USB CHARGE. Selected MASS STORAGE and then the camera connected to Thunar, tried to load picture directory and then disconnected.

Any help would be appreciated.

Only to understand that right: Do You have any specific Issues with the Camera?

The camera is 100% fine, no issues with the camera itself.

The only issue is when it tries to connect to the PC running Zorin (so that I can download pictures in USB mode to view on PC or edit, etc)...connection to PC is hit & miss. As you can see from the dmesg info in post above, it connects does all sorts of haywire stuff then disconnects itself.

Did You tried a different USB Port or Cable?

Yes, same result
