Just wondering how I can do this to common locations and folders so that I do not need to navigate through the folder structure every time I want to access files.

Open the folder you like to add and then in the top bar of your file manager click on the three dots and select "Add to bookmarks". Then the folder is added to the left side of the filemanager.
Only to be clear: Do You mean to move Stuff in the Favorites Entry at the left Side or to add an Entry to the left Side?
