AS per title but the file is from a backup of another machine that uses mint, and I want to run some navigation software from it on this computer... would I be better to set up a vb machine?
A simple tar file can be explored using the default archive manager. Double click should be enough, but you can also right-click on the file and the first option should be "open with archive manager". If you choose "extract here" instead, it will create a folder that you can also use to see what's inside.
