How to use Create Disc Image in Zorin

I am new to Zorin and am happy to have escaped from the tyranny of Windows 10, the only other operating system that I know. I have Zorin OS 17.1 Core and my files on Disc 1. It's been a learning curve, but just about everything is working well for me. Now I want to make a copy or clone of Disc 1 (1TB) on Disc 2 (1TB), which is a second internal disk drive, to keep in case Disc 1 fails. I have formatted Disc 2 in Ext4 and created a partition using all the space. I selected Disc 1, clicked the three dots and clicked Create Disc Image. The Source Disc is Disc 1 and for Save in Folder I selected Disc 2 which Zorin recognizes. I clicked Create Disc, authenticated with my password, and got the following message: "Error unmounting /dev/sda2:target is busy (udisks-error-quark, 14)". I tried several times, but got the same result each time. What do I need to do to get this feature to work? I know I could use Rescuezilla, but I would like to get this feature built in to Zorin to work for me. Many thanks for the help.

I think someone else had this query and the suggestion was to use 'disks' to create an .img file:

The only other option is to use the 'dd' command in a terminal, also covered in that link.

I suggest that you delete your partition on Disk 2 which is possibly causing that error message so that you are starting with a clean drive. You only need to format to Ext4 if you were using it as a Timeshift backup location.

Hi swarfendor437, thanks for your reply, that was helpful.
Yes I am trying to use GNOME Disks which came with my distribution of Linux )S 17.1 Core. I did a quick format of Disk 2 which deleted the partition and it now shows as unallocated space. I selected Disc 1, clicked the three dots and clicked Create Disc Image. The Source Disc is Disc 1 and for Save in Folder I looked for Disc 2, but now Zorin does not see it. So I can't go any further.

OK, boot with live media but this time use Gparted to format disk 2 with Ext4, but don't allocate it to a given name such as / or /home. Once that is done, try Disks once more, but use Disks from the live media instead.

I'm sorry, but I'm still learning. Please could you explain what it means to boot with live media? I do want to try your suggestion.

What they mean is to make a live usb of Zorin (or realistically any linux os, but we'll keep it Zorin) and then once you've got a usb made, you're going to boot into the usb like you probably did when you were going to install the OS in the first place, but instead of installing the OS, we're going to use the live-environment (testing out the OS before installing) to do the changes that we want to see.

Let me know if that makes a little more sense.

Live environment = "Try Zorin" mode from the installation USB.

Thanks to all, I understand what to do now. I need to schedule the time to do this and will post how it goes.

I shut down Zorin and booted with the USB that I used to install Zorin, but this time I used "Try Zorin". That worked fine. I tried to use GParted to format Drive 2, but it could not find Drive 2. So I used Disk to format Drive 2, went to Drive 1 and tried Create Disk Image, but it could not find Drive 2. So I created a partition in Drive 2 using all the space and named it Backup. Then I went to Drive 1 and tried Create Disk Image again. I clicked Other Locations and it found Drive 2. I clicked Create Image and got the following message:
Could not read the contents of Backup
Error opening directory 'media/zorin/Backup': Permission denied
So it's still not working for me.
Zorin offers to save the Disk Image in Media on Drive 1. I'm wondering if I could do that and then copy it to Drive 2. Does that make any sense?

What filesystem did you format disc2 with? I also think it might be a permissions issue in respect of disc2.

Thanks for staying with me. I formatted Disc 2 in Ext4.
I also tried my idea in my last post of telling Zorin to Create Disc Image of Disc 1 and save it in Disc 1 (I selected the desktop so that I could find it easily), and planning to copy it and save it in Disc 2 later.
Once again I got the message: "Error unmounting /dev/sda2:target is busy (udisks-error-quark, 14)".
Do you think Zorin wants to unmount Disc 1 before creating an image, and it can't do that since it is running on Disc 1?
If so, do you I think I should try doing this but booting from live media (my Zorin USB stick)?
It all seems more complicated than it needs to be! I have used the feature in Windows 7 to create and save what Windows calls a "System Image" on a second drive, and it was always seamless.

It is a bit more complicated:

Personally using Timeshift to create rsync snapshots would be the best way forward.

Thanks for that, that link was very informative.
All this has helped me to see that GNOME Disks is not as simple as it looks.
I think I'm going to try something else, probably Rescuezilla as it's important to me with my limited capability that it is easy to use.
I had success with Windows using Acronis True Image to clone my mechanical hard drive to a Crucial SSD a few years ago. Hopefully Rescuezilla will work similarly.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to helping me.
