HP Elitebook 840 G10 fans not available in Zorin 17

Hello all,

I have been noticing my new Elitebook 840 G10 fans are not active in Zorin 17. "Hardware Sensor Indicator" app shows temps well over the 170F temps constantly.

"FanControl" states "there are no pwm capable fans in your system"

The fans are not dirty, this is a new laptop out of the box.

They work in Windows.

I'm sort of at a loss on how to get the fans working in Zorin OS.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

So I did a quick look and this seems like a fairly new laptop. Sometimes things like this would require newer intel-microcode in order to function properly. However, if you install lm-sensors and see if anything is noticed that way, it might be another check.

If it's a situation where newer microcode is required, sometimes if you search in Synaptic for Intel-microcode, you may find a newer package available. You could also check "Additional Drivers", but I doubt that would show anything.

You may also try the following grub parameters:
acpi_osi= acpi_enforce_resources=lax

Ensure you have done sources updates and upgrades, first.

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

I recommend performing all CLI actions using the Advanced options > Recovery Menu to conserve resources and avoid overheating while you run the commands.

Also is this a dual boot setup, or is this running solo on a drive, or is it in a virtual machine? I would be curious if you ran (off a live USB) a newer OS (such as an Arch based distro) that contains newer kernel and microcode that might solve this issue.

Hi again,

This is Zorin OS 17 installed to the bare metal on this laptop. Cleaned the partition and installed from a Zorin bootable USB.
