Hybrid Graphics

Hi all,

Since a week i have Pop! OS installed on my external drive and since then i did not boot back to Windows. I have 1 question for people who have 2 graphic cards. Do you use the NVIDIA graphics only ? My Pop! OS seems to have set it this way. It did not select HYBRID Graphics by default and i really want to know if i should change it to hybrid or keep it like this. The only thing i do is game and surf the net. But i am not sure. I found some info about it here but i don't want to use command stuff to get games to work. Do people who use hybrid need to use these commands ?

My system does not have a mux switch.

I am set to use the integrated Intel graphics - Nvidia kicks in only when I perform hower demand tasks like Blender or video editing or gaming. I have never needed to enter any commands or change the defaults and it has always worked without any issues.

Thanks for your reply. Does it still switch when intel graphics is selected ? From the Pop! OS site it says

" Integrated

Integrated graphics mode uses the integrated GPU only and turns off the NVIDIA GPU. This mode uses less power, leading to a longer battery life and less fan noise."

Am i missing something ?

I am on a PC (Desktop), so no batteries to worry about... But yes, the Intel is used normally with Nvidia operating only under heavy load.
When returning to a light load, it falls back to Intel.

It turns off Nvidia only when it is not needed; not permanently. I may not properly understand your question in addition to not being an expert on Graphics.
It looks like the integrated selection is to use only the integrated graphics card and not the dedicated card.
I use select which selects the graphics card to use based on need.

Well my question is more, my system is set on NVIDIA only now and wondered if more people kept it like this. From my understanding iGPU is turned off. When i check in terminal which card is in use it clearly says NVIDIA. If i want the same thing like you have i have to switch to hybrid. I don't care much about the battery since it's plugged it anyway when i game :wink: . And if i switch to hybrid i really want to know if people uses these commands

Hybrid

Hybrid graphics mode uses both the integrated GPU and the discrete NVIDIA GPU. Applications will use the integrated GPU unless explicitly requested to use the discrete GPU.

Vulkan applications must be launched with this command to be rendered on the dGPU (NVIDIA):

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 <application>

GLX applications must be launched with this command to be rendered on the dGPU (NVIDIA):

__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia <application>

Hybrid graphics mode is available on 19.10 and later.

I changed the graphics to hybrid, the power button is white now. When i surf the net it stays white. When i open a high demanding app (steam) it changes to orange. Much better compared to Windows, my nvidia card was ALWAYS in use for some reason in Windows. I checked everything in Windows last time, no high demanding app was running. Things are much better handled on linux then it is on windows.

My temps also look alot better compared to Windows.

nvme-pci-0200: Main Windows drive (normally around 32-37c idle)
nvme-pci-0300: Gaming drive (normally around 35-45c idle)
coretemp-isa-0000: This is the cpu, i am pretty sure this one is alot higher on Windows as i was shocked how low it was now.
iwlwifi_1-virtual-0: Wifi card temp
acpitz-acpi-0: This one is unknown to me

Picture from 15 minutes later:

Nvidia card is set as how it should, low MHZ because it's not in use + temps are cooler.
