So i was curious so i just took ownership of the whole computer including / and then when i restarted it,it came a black screen i was shiing my pants
It said tty4
And is now saying things like [time]
[Depend]
[Failed]
Pls tell me how to fix this im really scared
(Also i dont believe this was due to me taking ownership)
Also it came a login page in written form and it didnt work
And it is now saying [failed] failed to start snap daemon.
Pls urgent help im shiing my pants.
Yes, it is the cause. Changing root ownership of critical system files means it can no longer see your kernel, the boot directory, systemd, etc.
Using the TTY, you might use (replace $USER with your user name) to try to reverse some of the changes you made.:
sudo find / -user $USER -exec chown root:root {} +
The reason that the above command is more involved than the one you ran to claim ownership of root: The Home directory is stored in root so running a simple reverse to restore root ownership would also claim all your User directories in Home directory, breaking anything like .Xauthority, etc.
This will not fix the system. But it may be enough that you can boot and access the data so you can transfer any personal files to a backup.
Then you can reinstall Zorin OS. I recommend a fresh install due to the rather complex task of restoring permissions.
Brother first of all i really appreciate your answer and i have some question
- What if when i boot tty doesnt come up
- What will happen after i execute the command and how can i recover data
- Will this surely work
- I can easily install a new zorin
- Thanku do much for your answer
- When u reply then i will start the process
Also thanks so much i wanted a fresh zorin install anyway
I also have another question is that can i take ownership of /home pls.
I would recommend starting fresh. When the system reaches this state where it can't even boot... it's just tedious to troubleshoot.
To retrieve your files, you can plug-in the USB drive formatted with the Zorin OS ISO. Boot into the live environment and select "Try It". You can now navigate to your drive and start moving the files somewhere safe: another drive, cloud storage, etc.
Once you have all your data properly backed up, use the shortcut on the desktop to proceed with the installation of Zorin OS.
This is probably faster, easier and it will fix the problem. And, it will have the nice side effect of ensuring you have all your importance files safely stored away!
Why do you want to do this?
- Thanks so much but first ill listen to master aravisian too.and really thanks
- I believe this ensured that i could easily back up my data.i mean is this fullproof
- I have two drives.one hdd and one nvme and i use the hdd for games and nvme for important files.anyway i like to mount both of them in /home pls just asking.i sometimes need to change some things in there so thats why
You can find a lot of wierd ppl using linux this is just my go to thing
I mean using linux itself is wierd(on your home pc when your windows is working just fine and youre just curious {and want to save performance})
Brothet another thing is that i already had /home ownership and all worked just fine it was only after sudo -R kuku /
Im sorry
Aravisian-chan im waiting for ur reply
@Aravisian has already given you the necessary step to make, and @zenzen has also provided the next steps. You cannot own /home in its entirety as 'root' also has its own folder within /home. The part of /home you own is that labeled with your username.
Thanks and sorry
I am sorry, I am currently attending an out of town family emergency.
Im so sorry for disturbing
I see the thread is marked as solved... does that mean you are all fixed up?
Im not actually fixed up i ordered a hdd online and im waiting for that to arrive before starting the new os but i understand how to do it and itll prolly work so its fine
