I'm getting a new computer

Next month, woohoo!!!

I'm going to get a Ryzen CPU and an AMD GPU. Goodbye to Nvidia!
I haven't looked close to the components I want to put it in. But it's going to be latest and best of both CPU and GPU can buy for money of AMD, and maybe 64GB RAM and so on.

There! I'm done flexing my muscles :stuck_out_tongue:

I recently upped my RAM to 32gigs and the vast majority of the time, I no longer see my RAM get filled.
Not.. that it is a big deal - filling it only means it dumps during use...
But psychologically, it is nice running an intense project or a game and seeing RAM at 64% instead of 99.99%.

At 64gigs, your system might be yawning at whatever you throw at it.

I'm going to have multiply Vector apps rolling at once. Well my "old" computer that has 32GB can do that now, but ... well, it just nice to have 64GB.

Maybe it can run tetris in the terminal :stuck_out_tongue:

It probably needs 128gb of ram :joy::crazy_face:

Congrats, I love that feeling of getting new stuff! I'm still happy with my 2~3 year old Tuxedo laptop, but I'm already looking forward for a Framework or even a System76. Maybe in a couple of years.

True that! I still use a smaller laptop for when I go on short trips, with very modest specs and at 4GB of RAM. I have to be very patient with it and I can get it to work, but it's quite the relief when I'm back on my main machine with 16GB. I've only once or twice managed to get close to the limit, but then I used Zram to gain a little extra punch.

Regarding my old computer. It's sometimes have a malfunction in core 5, so it's either getting a new CPU or getting a new computer. When core 5 malfunction the computer reboots itself to start up again ... which is annoying when you do work on it.

At 64, even running large LLMs to mess around, I never come close to running low or swapping. I value it for being able to provide a lot of RAM to a VM without impacting the rest of the system, though. I haven't regretted the expense. It's easier to stress my CPU, even having bought a pretty high end one. (Zorin's system monitor actually makes fairly pretty squiggly "art" from my CPU load across 32 logical cores.)

Building a new PC is everytime like Christmas when You have laying the Boxes with the Parts everywhere, hahaha!

Christmas comes only at every 8. year at my place. Usually I buy spare parts if something is broken in between these 8 years.

But now has time when I need new gear.

welcome to team red

Congratulations Storm, I am happy for you! I am sure you remember when I got my new MSI computer, back in 2021. There is nothing like the experience, of opening a box, that reveals your new computer. And trust me, those stock photo's on websites, never do it justice, like we could with nice camera's.

When you pull that computer out of the box, pull the shrink wrap and foam coverings off of it, you begin caressing it, while say wow, just like Ralphie did, in A Christmas Story. Taps will be heard in the background for the demotion of your old computer, while you are setting up your new computer.

A quick refresher incase you forgot, I never even booted up my new computer into Windows after I got it. I booted it into the bio's first, set some options, and immediately, booted off my external USB drive, to install POP OS. I already knew all I needed to know about Windows 10, and had 0 interest.

Of course, Windows fought me in my attempts to delete the hidden Windows partitions off the drive. However, by Murlans beared, I wiped those slimy partitions off after the 2nd attempt, so that I could make way for POP OS, at first, but then later, switched to Zorin OS down the line of course.

You will notice just how much faster your new computer is, just as I had noticed with mine. Its not how much RAM you have, its how you use it. With that said, a combination of fast CPU, fast GPU, and your 64GB of RAM, will produce such a sweet, fast and smooth experience, you will wonder how you did without for so long.

Behold, for Storm is about to experience computerized heaven, raze your mugs of megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes, and drink your choice of energetic liquid gold, 3-cheers for Storm!

Thank you.
There's also a special smell of new hardware/computer that's intoxicating

Congratulations @Storm its exciting putting a new build together. I built myself a NAS (OMV) back in the spring and finally have years of data sensibly stored and accessable instead of on a collection of usb drives.

A laptop is essential to me as I live between two geographic locations and am sometimes away for extended periods. My home setup is a self-build.

ZorinOS 17.2 landed at the exact moment for me: following the hardware failure on my old laptop I have just taken delivery of a new Lenovo ThinkBook with 16Gb RAM (however, I searched through all models to find one of the few with SODIMM rather than soldered in so I can upgrade), 1TB SSD and Ultra 5 125U processor. Ideally I wanted AMD but that wasn't available.

Zorin 17.2 is required to support the Ultra5, otherwise I was going to have to look elsewhere.

It was always my intention to dual boot for a while - I have several legacy clients requiring .NET 4.8 in Visual Studio. Also my photographic workflow is Lightroom-very-classic (from the last version you could still buy the CD) and Affinity Photo. My plan there is to start learning DarkTable in parallel. I know Affinity runs fine in Boxes, so long as it doesn't slow it down overly.

The rest of my work can all be done in Linux native apps.

I have spent the last week battling with windows 11 - not an enjoyable experience. I can't believe how intrusive the system is, and how they've mangled it so much. It seems like you have to constantly fight it to do what you want, then up pops another 'you haven't signed up to store all your data in our cloud' alert. They don't take 'No thanks and don't bother me again' as a correct answer. Even when you shout it at the screen.

However, Windows performed one very useful function: downloading Zorin, which I installed yesterday and its a dream, a relief. Everything seems to work, and it looks so much better. I find myself more relaxed and smiling in front of it. More productive.

I am impressed with the display options:

  • the fractional scaling works (125%) as this was a no-go on my old laptop in 17.1.

  • on plugging in my large monitor, the options to mirror screen or display different workspaces just worked, along with the audio routing options.

My partner is highly impressed and wants to switch to ZorinOS on her Windows 10 laptop in the coming months. Mission accomplished!

Thank you Zorin, and this forum.
