I'm trying to put together a house floor plan with an Email friendly 3D designer tool. It was working fine until recently and now I'm getting a notice "Your graphics card does not seem to support WebGL." Also, I'm unable to get radar readouts I used to on Weather.com or Accuweather. With all the updates going on lately, are we getting graphics updates that could be affecting things like this?
Can You remember what Updates You received? Also: Can You post Your Hardware Specs?
yeah that "graphics card does not seem to support WebGL" line after a pile of updates is usually the browser losing gpu acceleration, not the card dying.
quick checks:
- which browser (firefox / chrome / brave) and is it snap/flatpak or the zorin package
-
- in firefox open about:support and look for WebGL 1/2 and Compositing. in chrome/brave open chrome://gpu
-
- in a terminal: glxinfo -B | grep -E 'renderer|OpenGL' (install mesa-utils if needed). if it says llvmpipe, the session is on software rendering and webgl maps will choke
also flip Settings > Performance (or about:preferences performance) so hardware acceleration is on, then fully quit the browser and reopen. paste the browser name plus the glxinfo renderer line and we can narrow it.
- in a terminal: glxinfo -B | grep -E 'renderer|OpenGL' (install mesa-utils if needed). if it says llvmpipe, the session is on software rendering and webgl maps will choke
I'm using Brave. It worked fine until a couple weeks ago then the 3D designer tool and the weather radar maps stopped working. I assume the Brave is operating on the Zorin package. How do I tell?
I'm sorry but I need specific directions for finding the information you need.
On your screenshot it looks as if you use the nouveau driver.
Which nvidia card do you have?
Go to Software&Updates > Additional drivers and look what is shown there.
Test if it is better in Xorg. That doesn't change the driver, but some computers/nvidia cards work better with Xorg.
Logout and at login screen click on your username, then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There you can switch between Xorg and Wayland. Then login.
to see which brave youve got, open a terminal and run:
which brave-browser || which brave
dpkg -l | grep -i brave
flatpak list | grep -i brave
snap list | grep -i brave
then in brave itself open a new tab and go to brave://gpu (same idea as chrome://gpu). scroll for WebGL and Graphics Feature Status. if it says software only / disabled, webgl floorplans and weather radar maps usually die.
also paste the output of:
glxinfo -B | grep -E 'renderer|OpenGL'
if that says llvmpipe, the desktop is on software rendering and brave cant get a real gpu path. if it shows your real gpu name, the break is more likely inside brave after an update.
Yes, but at the moment you are running on Wayland. Updates sometimes change that. I would recommend to switch back to Xorg at login screen to test if it is better then. The Xorg X server --nouveau is not the same Xorg which you select at the login-screen.
How do I switch to getting a logon screen? The system boots up to my desktop.
Use a login with password, then you can switch between Xorg and Wayland at login-screen (cog-wheel).
Later you can switch back to an automatic login, if you like.
At the settings app > system > user
you can change it.
Yes, it was on Zorin Desktop again which I assume is Wayland. Switched it back to Xorg and still no joy on the weather radar screens or the 3D designer graphic.
Have you tried an older kernel? At grub menu select "Advanced options for Zorin", then you can select an older kernel for the next boot (choose not the recovery kernel) to test if that helps.
Looks like Brave is installed as Flatpak. You could uninstall Brave as Flatpak and then install the .deb Package.
To uninstall the Flatpak:
flatpak remove com.brave.Browser --delete-data
To install the .deb Version:
sudo apt install brave-browser
sudo curl -fsSLo /usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg
then
echo "deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg] https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/ stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-browser-release.list
then
sudo apt update && sudo apt install brave-browser
you may need to install curl
sudo apt install curl
That did it. It's all good. Thanks everybody. It probably doesn't get said often enough but this forum is a great resource and I appreciate the help.
no problem saw the suggestion for debian version and I had the commands ready
