I'm worried that I've might got a virus from Unofficial Unity Hub on software

So I first installed Unity Hub on the Software App, once I close the unity hub application, its still runs in background called "unityhub bin" I've tried to end it, they kept coming back up which had me suspicious. So I didn't mind because I thought there was only one version of it, I thought unity didn't supported Linux,so I found out a Official Unity From Website: which is I found out about it recently, they support Linux version so I'm not sure if I should install that one lol.

Welp, now I'm worried because I installed the unofficial Unity Hub from software, and it say source code is not open source, but I checked and is it?!?? I'm worried that I might be already too late, I feel like I have a virus on my computer from the unofficial unity hub ://
Which version should I use Unity Hub from??

Please help me out, what should I do? Should I be worried about that? and why is there Unity Hub on a software app while ITS EXACTLY same as the one on the website -_-

If you want to use the packages of the unity devolopers, you can download the .deb package for ubuntu 22.04. Adding the repo may fail because it is for ubuntu 24.04.

Flatpak offers a inofficial version of unity. You can uninstall it if you don't trust the source.

It is not a virus.

When Flatpak supplies a package, they are considered the maintainer. Since they are the supplying maintainer on Flathub, not Unity, that is the reason it is "unofficial." Because even if it is the same exact package, it is supplied by Flathub, not Unity.
By packaging in in a flatpak container, which is something Unity does not do, Flathub is considered to have modified, therefor taken ownership of maintaining the wrapped package.

Unity Hub (Which I also have installed) runs unityhub-bin in the background to manage updates, track projects and ensure secure licensing - it is normal just as Gnome Software runs in the background, checking for updates, etc.

If you do not want it running in the background, you can remove its .desktop entry in your Application Autostart folder in ~/.config/autostart
When you do run UnityHub, kill the process when finished.

Okay, Thanks =)

You said you have also installed unity hub from software? yes? Is Unofficial Unity Hub better than Official Unity Hub for the security and safety.

I installed the Official from Unity Hub.

I cannot meaningfully answer which is more secure. However, if I had to guess, I would actually suggest that the unofficial one is, simply because it is a Flatpak and therefor is containerized. That gives an edge for security.

Okay! I think I'm gonna go with Official Unity Hub for now. I also cannot find a unity hub autostart in ~/.config/autostart

You can make an autostart entry by placing a .desktop file in that folder. Did Unity provide one that is in /usr/share/applications or ~/.local/share/applications?

Oh wait, I see it so what now?

Copy the .desktop file from ~/.local/share/applications or /usr/share/applications to your ~/.config/autostart folder. Then, launch Startup Applications to enable it.

I don't want to runs in background though I just literally said that, so no.

Oops, please excuse me. I glanced over at the thread and read that you were looking for a file in this directory, which typically means you want to enable something, not the other way around.

But it's still worth pointing out that you can still disable/enable this from Startup Applications menu as well.

Same.

I read that as asking how to add to autostart, not how to remove it.

Idk im confused

So, what's the concern here: security or resource consumption? I very much doubt that this package is a virus only because it says "unofficial". It's actually not that uncommon, and Flatpak packages are isolated from the rest of the system anyway.

If you are concerned, just uninstall it and use the official version as per the instructions on the website. Otherwise, don't sweat it and carry on as usual
