Information about Installation

Hello everyone, I have a question to ask, especially for more experts.
I have an old Toshiba satellite pro 4600 with 512mb of ram, with Windows 2000 currently installed. I would like to revive this PC. Can you tell me which version of Zorion OS is best suited for such an old laptop?
A thousand thanks!

Hello,

You need at least 2 GB RAM to run Zorin Lite. But you could take a look at MXLinux and alike.

here's 9 distros to choose from

Can it take any more RAM, or is it maxed out at 512Mb?
How big is the HDD? (I believe some of those only had 10GB HDD)

Toshiba are noted for having issues running GNU/Linux. I played around with a Satellite 4060 many years ago and I had to use a floppy disk of PLOP boot manager as it won't boot off a CD/DVD which raises another issue.

The other issue you will have is graphics. The only OS I managed to install was Wolvix Cub and I had to drill-down into the graphics element to get graphics working. Sadly Wolvix is no more. The other issue with old versions of GNU/Linux is that if you could get it installed you can't update the browser.

I'll take a look at these distributions. My PC has a 15GB disk and the installed RAM is 512mb. It is not possible to add more RAM. It is already installed at maximum capacity.

I already have a floppy to boot an operating system from USB or CD/DVD. Already tested and working. All I need is a suitable operating system! I'll do some testing.

I would go with one of these three,
Puppy Linux, Q4OS (Trinity Desktop Edition), or Slitaz.

I have a Belkin Wireless G Notebook Card, 802.11 connection.
Model F5D7010.
Operating system: Slitaz
Does anyone know how to install it?

This looks like a job for antiX Linux.

In the end I managed to solve the wifi problem with Slitaz. Now it works.

I have a problem with playing any videos and DVDs. I've never had any problems with Windows 2000.

I installed SMPlayer but if I try to start the DVD, path: "open/disc/DVD from drive" this message appears:

oops something went wrong MPlayer/mpv terminated unexpectedly. Exit code 127

/usr/bin/mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: libvpx.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

It seems like there is a problem with SMPlayer with cooking packages.

You need to to install restricted packaged as well as libdvd. They don't come install by default as it may me "illegal" in some countries.
Did you also tick under instillation install retricted drivers etc.?

Unfortunately I don't use ZorinOS but Slitaz as my operating system.
I'm not very protic, but how do you install restricted packaged and libdvd?
