If you are the only user, I would just try ~/.icons
for now and see if it works.
There is currently no icons folder at this location. Should I create one?
Yep, you can. Name it
.icons
It doesn't work.
What does not work?
Naming it?
Creating it?
Placing the icons?
Getting the icons to show up?
I can choose ubo but the icons don´t appear. The icons change, but do not look like the selected ones.
Hmmm... Maybe we need to trade screenshots and compare. When I choose Ubo, I see a definite change in icons, which matches the screenshot on the Pling webpage.
However, I have not compared all the icons. Maybe we are paying attention to different icons, depending on what we are prioritizing.
Ah, now I can see some when I open the menu. I had only looked at the taskbar and there were none like that.
That means this ubo theme contains only a few icons, so many of the programs in Zorin are not covered and are therefore displayed with a different icon. Too bad!
Ah. Yes, that can happen.
There is good news: When I found issues like this in the past, I simply created the missing icons. Maybe this can be done for Ubo.
I think ubo and buuf could complement each other. I wanted to replace the icons I don't like with the other theme.
Which I haven't found a solution for yet: The icon themes are always stored in hidden files. However, if I want to change specific images, I cannot select the hidden files in the editing menu of Menu libre - because Thunar does not open to select the image. Do I have to save the icon themes again in an accessible location (downloads, images)? I would much rather use thunar for image selection in menu libre (whisker menu). Is that possible?
Tap ctl+h
in your open file picker and it should show the .hidden files.
Then you can open them...
Great, thank you!!!
The only thing missing now is the preview of the individual files. Is there a keyboard shortcut for this so that I don't have to click on all the images individually?
Hmmm...
Thunar should show previews. Other than checking your settings for the file manager under preferences
, you may try
killall thunar
sudo apt install tumbler tumbler-plugins-extra ffmpegthumbnailer
thunar
and test
I don't mean Thunar - he can do that and shows previews. That's why I would also like to have this in the file search in Menu libre.
I would like to add the following: Preview images are often displayed in menu libre, but not always. Sometimes they are shown directly in the overview of a folder, sometimes each individual file has to be clicked first to see the image.
Oh, I see. That... is an unusual request... MenuLibre helps the user organize the structure and categorization of their application menu. I am not sure what need there is in that for image previews. I must be misunderstanding your intentions.
I have icons in the start menu that I don't like, e.g. because there is no suitable icon available in the selected theme (e.g. ksnip). I would therefore like to select a different icon for it. I also don't like the profile picture with the man in the hat or the logout icon. I would like to choose other icons and the preview would be useful for this. What I can also do, however, is to first search for the picture in Thunar using the preview and remember the exact location or file number.
Oh, yes. You can just change the icon itself directly in the icon theme, even. Rather than giving a redirect.
In your Ubo Theme set, your Applications
folders will hold the icons it sounds like you are trying to replace.
I know exactly how you feel. I have gone through the same; unhappy with one icon or another and changing them out - this developed into me creating new original icon sets. Who knows how far you may go... but your exploration is healthy and fun all the same.
Some applications may not respect the system theme and instead call on their icons from their own location. or from /usr/share/pixmaps
. This is a case of developers wanting to retain control and sidestepping the end user and it can be very annoying.
So you may sometimes have to hunt down an icon. Checking pixmaps as I mentioned above or in /usr/share/icons/hicolor
are a good starting point. If none there, check that programs installed location like /opt
or /etc
or even in the home directory under its stored application folder.
Unfortunately, I'm not such a talented painter to design such pretty symbols in the same style.
So it's better to change the icons directly in the icon theme itself than in the whisker menu?
Are there otherwise any other steps required to set this up system-wide? I thought that when I change the icons in the whisker menu, the icons on the taskbar are also automatically adjusted (at least if they are shortcuts that I have set up in the whisker menu with "add to panel").
But I have never dealt with such subtleties, as I have never changed the icons in Windows. In Linux, there are so many ways to customize things to personal preference, and I really enjoy figuring it out.
I think it is more effective.
Fair enough, but you are replacing icons from some other source, right?
System-wide would be that the icons are installed in /usr/share/icons
rather than in home directory ~/.icons
- am I misunderstanding your question?
Same. I could never go back....
