i did when it was on zorin desktop, but after i install cinnamon or mate it stops at a login screen
Can you please follow these steps to enter the Recovery Menu:
Once there, arrow key to the bottom to Drop To Prompt.
Run
sudo nano /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
Arrown key down to the line AutomaticLoginEnable=true and place a hashtag in front to comment it out. It will look like:#AutomaticLoginEnable=true
Do the same for the line:
Automatic Login=$USER to make it #Automatic Login=$USER
Tap ctrl+x to exit the editor, then the y key to say yes to save, then the enter key to save current configuration.
Back out of the Recovery Menu and reboot or proceed to normal boot and test.
I figured out the problem. I was trying to remove zorin desktop after installing cinnamon. Also cinnamon will not fully install despite running sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment. If i just type sudo apt install cinnamon, i get error
For cjs. On themate desktop I dont get any menus just a background and a home folder. So I gave up and reinstalled the zorin desktop until I can switch distros.

Yes, removing the Zorin-Desktop will also remove dependent and integrated packages. You can install and use the Cinnamon D.E. without removing anything. It is not advisable to try to remove the desktop.
Please ensure that you are Set To Main Server.
You can install Cinnamon D.E. on Zorin OS (As I have and use and several others use Cinnamon without trouble):
sudo apt update && sudo apt install cinnamon cinnamon-core
OR for the Full D.E.:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install cinnamon cinnamon-desktop-environment
Cinnamon: depends on libcjs0. When I install that it says cinnamon: depends on licjs0f when I install that it removes libcjs0 and around around it goes.
This sounds like you are Not Set to Main Server.

From the app menu, please launch Software & Updates
On the first tab, you should see "Download From" with a drop down menu. Select from the drop down menu: Main Server.
Ensure that the Top Four Options are checked.

Yes i added some cinnamon repositories but it still doesn't install
Please remove those repositories as they are intended for use specifically with that packaging and Mint distro.
Instead, you should rely solely on the Main Universe Repository build.
Your thinking is correct - and for some reason, something is stopping you from getting the packages.
I think a screenshot of Software & Updates open to the First tab may be a good starting place for us to investigate why this install is not working.
OK I removed all the unnecessary repositories and now i get the message

As you can see, with the Base Build - Main Universe repository - Main Server I cannot replicate your issue.
For Clarity: The ability to replicate an issue is a means of easing locating the problem. It is never required that an issue be replicated in order to troubleshoot.
But this does imply pretty strongly that there are added Mint Repositories that are trying to install different packages and this is causing conflict.
Can you please provide the previously asked for screenshot - as will as the full list of added repositories?
I had some repositories from bullsye and
ppa:trebelnik-stefina/cinnamon
Index of /embrosyn/cinnamon/ubuntu focal
I actually used to use and recommend the embrosyn repository, too. That is because at that time, the embrosyn repository contained the higher packages. This has changed, however - and the safest method is to not use Bullseye or Embrosyn or any other additional repo: The Ubuntu Main Universe repo has everything needed without any conflicts with the up to date packages.
I prefer and use Nemo File Manager on Zorin OS; and Nemo is the one exception as I prefer the version 5 of Nemo. That, however is a separately handled issue entirely and we can cover that separately if you like once this current issue is resolved.
I was able to track down and uninstall the broken packages from the unstable
Cinnamon repo and after that cinnamon installed and is now working. Thank you for all your help with troubleshooting the issue with me!
