Installing nemo-preview extension for Nemo file browser

I installed Nemo last night to replace Nautilus, but haven't managed to install nemo-preview. It's not available in ubuntu repositories it seems. Tried a few things last night, finally trying to build from source, which I also failed with on installing mint-dev-tools step and gave up.

Does anyone know how I can get the Nemo Preview extension installed on Zorin?

Oh yeah, if you do install Nemo, don't remove Nautilus, otherwise bad things will happen... thanks to timeshift for saving my bacon there!

Sorry I can't help, just a comment. This is one thing I dislike about GNU/Linux when you are supposed to have freedom of choice. Remove just one embedded item (Files (Nautilus), PulseAudio) and say goodbye to your sustem. Plasma isn't much better regarding this if key KDE apps are removed.

Ironically, Brave A.I. search engine comes back with:

"#

GNU/Linux Distro with Stable Core

When considering a GNU/Linux distribution that remains stable even after removing a file manager, it's important to choose one that is robust and has a strong community support system. Distributions like Ubuntu and its derivatives, such as Kubuntu, are known for their stability and comprehensive package management systems, which can handle the removal of a file manager without causing system instability.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu provide a wide range of file managers and desktop environments, making it easy to switch or remove a file manager without disrupting the overall system functionality. Additionally, these distributions have extensive documentation and community support, which can be invaluable if you encounter any issues after removing a file manager.

For users who prefer a more lightweight and customizable experience, distributions like Arch Linux and its derivatives, such as Manjaro, offer flexibility and a strong community that can assist with any issues that arise from removing a file manager.

In summary, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Manjaro are good choices for a GNU/Linux distribution that can handle the removal of a file manager without falling apart."

... and in respect of Ubuntu that brings us to the issue of 'snap'. :scream:

I wasn't quite sure what had happened at first, rebooted into what looked like recovery, but with taskbar, app bar etc. I think a lot of those packages must have had a dependency on nautilus, although I haven't specifically checked.

Was just glad that it was relatively straight forward to recover from once I realised what had happened.

Probably also a lesson there in doing sys config at 1am when you're already tired...

I noticed same query in the FaceBook group and I commented. However, the administrator of the group didn't approve the comment that it never appear. Please blame it to the administrator as I left the group.

sudo apt install ffmpegthumbs

This command may help your request.

If you use the Thunar that originally bandled with Zorin OS, the following command will help you.

sudo apt install tumbler tumbler-plugins-extra ffmpegthumbnailer

For Nautilus, please try the following command.
sudo apt install ffmpegthumbnailer tumbler gstreamer1.0-libav

Then, check the setting of Nautilus.

I recommend you to try Dolphin, the file manager of KDE, because its largest magnification of preview scale is larger than Nemo.

When Dolphin is installed in non-KDE plasma-based OS, the following command will make it enable preview/thumbnail the pictures/movies.

sudo apt install ffmpegthumbs

Thunar specifically comes with Lite, not Core.

Yes, that's right. But you can find Thunar in addition to the Nautilis in Zorin OS Core 17.2. Both file managers are installed from the beginning.

I wasn't aware of that. Thought you had to install either via Software/Synaptic/bash.

Thanks, I might give that a go. I do like Nemo though, obviously familiar from Nautilus, but more flexible and with some of the 'missing features' from Nautilus.

No, they shouldn't. On Core only Nautilus comes preinstalled because it is Gnome-based. There is no Thunar. When You search in the Searchbar, it will show You Thunar, yes. But then this could be a Result from the Software Store.

I've managed to get it working somehow.

Mostly installing the required dependencies from https://mint.pkgs.org/21.3/mint-backport-amd64 and the nemo extensions from here Releases · linuxmint/nemo-extensions · GitHub I think.

Sorry, I may mixed. I use Zorin OS Core and Lite both on each equipment.
Anyway, it's good it seems the questioner resolved his issue.

I had the same situation with the questioner, and I could resolved with Thunar on Zorin OS Lite, Dolphin on several non-KDE OS applying the above command in the terminal.

I've spent some time in the past trying to get some of Mint's own programs to run properly in Zorin OS, but was never able to. So, kudos!
