Hello folks,
Brand-new to Linux and struggling to get my Canon colour laser to work. I have downloaded the 64-bit Debian package from Canon USA but that's as far as I have got.
If you can help me, I need EXACT instructions on what I have to do. For example, if I have to enter commands in Terminal, PLEASE tell me to open Terminal first rather than assume that I know exactly what I have to do - in other words, please assume that I have NO knowledge and go from there!
So, I have a compressed folder called 'linux-UFRIILT-drv-v500-usen-18.tar.gz' and after double-clicking this I have an additional folder called 'linux-UFRIILT-drv-v500-usen-18' which, in turn, contains a folder called 'linux-UFRIILT-drv-v500-usen' which contains several folders, one of which is called '64-bit_Driver'.
But that's as far as I get.
I don't know what to do next. There doesn't seem to be any installation program in that folder - except a file called 'install.sh'.
Is that the installation file? If so, what do I do with it? Some research suggests that I have to make this file executable using a command chmod.
I've managed (with some difficulty I might add as Linux is completely new to me) to navigate using Terminal to the folder that contains the compressed folder, namely 'linux-UFRIILT-drv-v500-usen-18.tar.gz' but (using some instructions found on the web), when I try to extract the files in that compressed folder, I get the error message
Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
The command I ran was: tar -xzvf linux-UFRIILT-drv-v500-usen-18.tar.gz and then after getting the error I tried: linux-UFRIILT-drv-v500-usen-18.tar
What doesn't make sense in the above commands is the '-xzvf' part - is that correct?
I'm stuck!
Somewhat infuriating as I have tried out Linux Mint 22.3 Zena and I managed without any drama to print (in colour) to the Canon Laser. Doesn't seem to be anywhere near as easy to do in Zorin (and no, I can't remember what I did in Mint to get it to work but I believe I used Software Manager).
Any help gratefully accepted,
Art
