I have recently acquired a laptop with Zorin Pro and am running versin 17.3. ID_LIKE says Debian Ubuntu. Proton says I should select either Debian GNOME or Ubuntu GNOME. Ubunto is based on Debian, so it's mildly confusing. Should I assume it's Ubuntu GNOME?
Choose ubuntu gnome.

Yes, Ubuntu. Zorin is based on Ubuntu - what is based on Debian. Which might be the Reason for that. Choose the Ubuntu Instructions from Proton. And the Desktop is Gnome Desktop.

How do I know if I have a Gnome desktop? When I go to Zorin Appearance, it doesn't mention Gnome under either Desktop or Layout.
You can find out with entering in terminal
echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
Zorin pro and Zorin core use gnome desktop,
Zorin pro lite and Zorin lite use xfce desktop.
