Intel Arc support in Zorin ...?

Hi again. I just posted separately about NVIDIA cards and Zorin. But this time, I'm asking about Intel Arc support. I may be interested in getting Intel. What's other folks' experience been using Intel Arc video cards with Zorin? Thanks.

I am not sure how to interpret the information on this page:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000091844/graphics.html

What I mean is it either requires an intel processor with integrated gpu, or will only work if you have the specified corresponding Intel Processor stated on that page. As Zorin is a fork of Ubuntu 22.04 it should run on Zorin provided the Intel requirements are met?

Brave A.I. states:

Intel Arc Linux Driver

Based on the provided search results, here is a summary of the current state of Linux drivers for Intel Arc graphics:

  1. Initial Release: Intel released its first Linux-bound graphics driver for Arc graphics cards in October 2022, specifically designed for Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04. This driver package eliminates the need for manual installation of individual drivers, making it easier for users to set up their Arc GPUs.
  2. Required Reboot: After installing the driver, users need to reboot their system twice to complete the setup process. This includes assigning the OS user to the ‘render’ group and installing diagnostic tools to ensure correct installation.
  3. Tinkering Required: As of October 2022, users willing to tinker with the driver may encounter potential roadblocks. Regular users are advised to wait until the driver is more mature and integrated with Mesa, requiring only a simple software update.
  4. Overclocking Planned: Intel has announced plans to add overclocking capabilities to its Arc GPU drivers, allowing enthusiasts to push their GPUs to the limit.
  5. Current Status: The Linux driver for Intel Arc graphics is still evolving, and users may encounter issues. However, the initial release has shown promise, and Intel is actively working on improving the driver’s stability and functionality.

Key Takeaways:

  • Intel Arc Linux drivers are available for Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04.
  • Users need to perform multiple reboots and manual configuration to set up the driver.
  • Overclocking capabilities are planned but not yet available.
  • The driver is still in development, and users may encounter issues.
  • Regular users are advised to wait for a more mature driver release.

Recommendations:

  • For users willing to tinker, the current driver release may be suitable for experimentation.
  • For regular users, it is recommended to wait for a more stable and user-friendly driver release.
  • Monitor Intel’s updates and announcements for future driver releases and improvements.

Additional Resources:

  • Intel’s documentation and instructions for installing and deploying the Arc graphics driver can be found on their website.
  • Community forums and online discussions may provide valuable insights and troubleshooting tips for users experiencing issues with the driver.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.

One thing to consider with Intel Arc, and it won't matter much if you only use your PC for office work, web browsing, and so on, is that Intel graphics performance has always been very poor. There's a reason they're an also-ran in the graphics market. But again, if you don't game, do 3d graphics of any sort, or so on, that doesn't matter much.
