I installed Zorin OS 18 Core a few days ago, migrating from Windows 10. Everything was working normally until last Saturday when the internet stopped working correctly. Even with the cable connected, the internet stopped working. Regarding Wi-Fi, I can connect to the network, but the internet doesn't work. Could someone help me solve these problems?
Welcome to the Forum!
Some Questions for the Start:
- Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
- Does Your System run in Wayland or X11? You can check that in Settings>About.
- When the Internet worked, did You take a Look at the ''Additional Drivers'' Tab in Software & Updates if there was a Driver offered?
- Could You post the Output of
sudo lshw -C networkandrfkill listplease? - Is Your Machine a Laptop or PC?
- Did You tested Zorin in Live Mode before You have installed it to see if Internet is working?
- Before it stops to work, did You recieve any System Updates?
-
Secure Boot and Fast Boot are disabled;
-
The system runs on Wayland;
-
I installed the system a few days ago and was using the internet normally. Periodically, I also checked for updates using the "software updater" application and the "apt update" and "apt upgrade" commands in the terminal;

I am forwarding the outputs below;
-
I use a PC;
-
I tested Zorin before installing. In fact, I've been using it for a few days without any problems so far;
-
I haven't received or installed any system updates in the last few days.

I forgot to mention that now I'm constantly getting a "connection failure. Failed to activate network connection" notification.
I also tested the network cable on a Windows 11 laptop, and it worked normally.
So, You didn't got a Kernel Update directly before this happened, yes? Or did You maybe a BIOS Update?
We could try here to switch to Xorg and see if it works. To do that, go to the Login Screen and click on Your Profile so that the Passwordfield appears. When it is appeared, You should see a Gear Icon in the bottom right Corner. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.
Before this problem arose on Saturday, I hadn't received or installed any updates.
I switched to Xorg as instructed, but the problem persists.
When I check the network settings related to the Ethernet cable, it shows "connecting". However, if I connect the cable to my Windows 11 laptop, the internet works normally.
I also tested with the Wi-Fi network. I tethered my mobile internet and connected it to the computer. It worked normally. However, when I switch to the home router's network, the problem of no internet connection returns.
Do You know if Your Router got any Updates? Maybe restart it could be worth a Try. unplug it from Power wait a bit and then plug it to Power again, let it initialze and see if it works again.
I agree, power cycle the modem, is the only thing that I can think of, thats is going to fix this problem you are facing. Unplug it, wait 5 minutes, then plug the power back in.
It takes a modem awhile to boot up, at least the old ones pre-WIFI did, so I'd also wait a couple minutes, then try the internet.
PS: Stay on Xorg, its better for 99% of PC's.
They both show with driver loaded and are detected with assigned designations. Are both Ethernet and WiFi having connection trouble?
So, aside from checking the router as @Ponce-De-Leon suggested, can you also check and list your installed kernels?
dpkg --list | grep linux-image
The router hasn't been updated recently.
I kept the router turned off for a few hours. However, after turning it back on, the internet didn't work properly on the computer, even though it was connected.
Unfortunately, turning the router off, waiting a while, and then turning it back on didn't solve the problem.
Regarding Xorg, thank you for the tip. I'll keep it enabled.
Both Ethernet and WiFi are having problems. They both show as connected, but they don't work. What I find strange is that when I tether my mobile internet, I can connect and use it normally.
Sobre o dpkg --list | grep linux-image, envio o resultado abaixo:
irsia@irsia-Inspiron-3268:~$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-6.14.0-33-generic 6.14.0-33.33~24.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-6.14.0-36-generic 6.14.0-36.36~24.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic-hwe-24.04 6.14.0-36.36~24.04.1 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image
Can you please reboot and access the grub menu - if you have the menu set as hidden, tap the tab or esc key at the motherboard splash screen to pull up the grub menu.
Select Advanced Options for Zorin
Then, select Zorin on 6.14.0-33-generic to boot from.
Once you reach the desktop, ensure you are booted on the 6.14.0-33 kernel by opening terminal and referencing
uname -r
Test if internet connection is working.
That solved the problem!
Thank you so much!
