Is it possible to have different desktops (icons, wallpaper) per workspace?

Hi there,

I am a ZorinOS newbie coming from Windows 10. I saw that you could have different programs opened in different workspaces, which is great, but I'd also want to have

  • different icons on the desktop for each workspace
  • a different wallpaper for each workspace.

Currently, changing the wallpaper or the desktop icons seems to propagate to all my workspaces.

Thanks for any help!

Leonos

It should work with this gnome extension. Install extension manager and then browse for this extension to install it. I'm not sure if it is already pre-installed in Zorin and only needs to be enabled. For Zorin 17 choose shell version 43, for Zorin 18 shell 46.

Thank you @Forpli ! I did that and it definitely works for choosing workspace-specific wallpapers. I can also choose which apps to pin on my task bar separately for each workspace so that's great.
I couldn't yet figure out how to have different icons on the desktop per workspace, but I'll keep looking!
Thanks!

I didn't find a solution for different desktop icons on each workspace. Someone made a script for linux mint cinnamon which offers this, but I found no gnome extension.
If you always want to open apps on a special workspace you can enable gnome extension "Auto Move Windows" in extension manager and create own rules there to define the workspace.

Thanks for looking! That's fine, being able to change the wallpaper and the pinned icons is already pretty good. Maybe the desktop icon customisation will be possible in future...

Thanks - Leonos

No, it will not be possible to have different icons for each workspace. Each app has an unique application ID.

But it might be possible to assign the desktop icons of different apps to a specific workspace on the desktop. Have you ever tried that?
Since you can assign the taskbar to a workspace, it might also work with the desktop icons.

For cinnamon I found an extension:

I tried but it did not behave as I wanted on my cinnamon desktop.

This is the site with informations how to set it up for other desktop environments.
Maybe it can be adapted for gnome:
