Keys not mapped properly

I have been on Zorin 17.3 for about 2 months and loving it. The reason for trying Zorin is to find an intuitive and hassle free Linux OS for me, and that i can recommend to others. I was going to purchase but now having second thoughts due to this issue. About 1/3 of the keys on my laptop keyboard aren't mapped properly, wrong letters etc. This is just for one user. Its fine for the login screen, its fine for another user, and its fine when I plug a keyboard in. Also Mint OS on the same PC is fine. This problem goes away some time after updating the system but comes back again. It has happened 3 times.

This is the only example I have:

Correct keys : The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Incorrect keys: The q45c2 br6wn f6x 140*ed 6ver the 3azy d6g.

Incorrect keys with ‘shift’: THE QCBRWN FXThis is a configuration tool for Fcitx Input Method Framework v5. It also provides fcitx5-migrator tool, which helps to migrate data from Fcitx4. To migrate Fcitx4 pinyin and table data, it needs tools from libime-bin package.*ED VER THE AZY DG

Hopefully there is a simple fix and hopefully the issue is caused by something I have downloaded, not an issue with Zorin.

Did you check the input sources?

Go to settings>keyboard>input sources and take a look if your country/language is selected there.

Is numlock perhaps enabled? Press Fn + NUM at the same time to disable numlock. Or is numlock permanently enabled in gsettings?

Are you using Wayland or XOrg? For fcitx5 it is recommended to switch to Xorg. To switch to Xorg logout and at login click on your username, then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right. There select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg".

Welcome to the Forum!

What Keyboard Layout do You use? And do you use more that one?

That sequence points to numeric keypad, that shares alphanumeric keys, being activated. e.g.:-

Is there a key or switch that enables the embedded num pad on the keyboard?

Many many thanks, this was the solution!
I have had this laptop for over 10 year and never once had this problem. Such a simple fix. And shift M was pasting what I had last copied.
