Laptop External Display

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 series that I've set up dual boot windows 10/zorin with Zorin my primary. I have a single HP monitor that I move the HDMI from that laptop to a work laptop. When I plug into the Dell running Zorin, I have to lift the lid before it pushes a signal to the monitor. I don't see any setting that would "fix" that so I don't have to lift the lid. Thoughts please?

How do you have your laptop display set up?
-Power options on lid close?
-Power options on external ports?
-Are you using tlp?

Looking into this, it looks like auto detection is kernel handled, so without either a function key combination or script pollng the interface, then disabling the laptop screen... It really isn't a possibility.

Searched through this:

And found this:

It started looking promising when I noticed:

And:

But I'm not sure this is exactly what you're looking for since you either have to press a key combo or waiste resources by having that script running in the background.
