When you want to install lightdm, you can do this with:
sudo apt install lightdm
And to set is as the default display manager:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

I do not recommend a user runs the command to only instlal xfce4, as that would be barebones.
The correct command is
sudo apt install zorin-os-lite-desktop
The terminal prompts will offer GDM3 or LightDM.
I recommend LightDM, but you can use either. LightDM looks different - this means more learning curve... But, it is more configurable and changeable and is easier to work with.
@Aravisian What would you do now to get to the Zorin lite desktop?
Is it better to install the Zorin themes, the Zorin appearance layouts and the Zorin lite menu and, if necessary, lightdm or to remove the previously installed ones and reinstall them? If so, how?
If you want to turn xfce4 into Zorin desktop lite, are any further steps required other than those mentioned above?
There is no need.
Running
sudo apt install zorin-os-lite-desktop
will install all themes and other Zorin OS specific pacakges. It will upgrade or replace any xfce4 packages as necessary.
It will also include Zorin OS Wallpapers.
Thank you very much, I hadn't really understood that this command was sufficient and can be used now without the necessary of removing something before. Now everything is clear!
Thanks to all, really appreciate your help and guidance. To be honest I'm a bit lost with next steps. I did this:
I'd like to try Zorin Lite Desktop and compare latency (and many other issues I've reported here in the forum) to Zorin core (default install) and Zorin Desktop on Xorg (as this has resolve many issues including far better performance).
However Zorin OS Lite displays no taskbar, no 'start' button no core Win10 desktop really, and I couldn't get System Monitor to run, other apps do run. It shows a mouse as a background desktop photo.
Xfce session seems to look and feel similar.
I tried sudo apt install zorin-os-lite-desktop again and it reports I have v1.5.5 installed.
I tried: sudo apt install --reinstall zorin-os-lite-desktop and no new install options presented.
Update: I've realised what's happening! I'm using the lappy monitor (folded down) and a separate HDMI monitor, when switching to Lite at the logon I'm only seeing the secondary monitor which is blank and has no panel etc. I've finally got the primary desktop onto the HDMI monitor. I'm up and running.
Update 2: Testing Lite out, there's no window size adjustment arrow bottom right of some dialog boxes (such as Libre), so I can't resize them easily. System Monitor and Brave are fine.
With ALT+right mouse button you can quickly drag windows to the correct size
Do you have the Zorin background now with the mountain or still the white mouse?
Light blue mouse and it looks a bit like Win10 but not polished like Zorin on Xorg. I've had to manually add various tools/apps to the panel. It actually feels (latency wise) slower than Zorin on Xorg, but maybe that's just me at the moment. I suspect I need more time with each.
That's not Zorin lite desktop.
And you choose Zorin OS lite session at login? Did you restart your computer? If not, try this once.
Yep, chose Zorin Lite session at logon and rebooted, no real difference, looks like this, Settings looks old skool. Feels a bit like Win7 rather than Win10.
Seems to tie in with my expectations of 'Lite' desktop though.
Hm that is strange...Did you remove Thunar (file manager) and Software from your panel or weren't they there?
The settings are normal for Zorin lite with the default theme.
I didn't remove them, they weren't there.
I think I'm up and running on Lite, although it's deffo a step backwards. I'll compare with Zorin core desktop on Xorg as tbh that's resolved many of my issues, it's far more responsive than default Zorin core, DnD files work with browser based upload sites and even notifications are functioning as expected in Telegram (the message actually appears sliding in on the right rather than intermittently with just random notifications at the top saying 'ready'), so perhaps the issues are Wayland related rather than Gnome? It seems using x11 has really helped!
That is the right Command.
Not directly incorrect. You have the Choice to use the Login Manager from the xfce Base from Lite. But if it doesn't bother You ... You can change it if You want.
Zorin Desktop => Zorin Core Desktop with Wayland
Zorin Desktop on Xorg => Zorin Core Desktop on X11/Xorg
Zorin OS Lite => Zorin Lite Desktop
xfce => should be pure xfce Desktop, I guess it came beacue of the Installation of the Lite Desktop (?)
When it now works for You, good.
Thanks to all for your help, even helping a Windoze guy!
So far Zorin on Xorg is cutting the mustard, so an exciting week to follow where I'll begin adding and configuring a few more apps such as Thunderbird etc to further clarify if porting to Zorin 17.3 is actually productive on this older lappy.
Cheers again
Lea
I think that since LeaUK installed XFCE as a Basic Install before installing the full desktop, it defaulted to the Basic Screen and setup.
Which does include that hideous stupid mouse wallpaper.
The Zorin Wallpapers should be presnet, now, though and changed easily with a right click.
So... @LeaUK - the way this worked out... by how the install was done... Kind of inhibited your experience a bit by setting you back three steps on Zorin Experience.
But that is ok!
Because this creates a situation that takes you through the settings and controls to fix it - Kind of like getting in a brand new car and learning where the headlight switch is, where the hazard light button is...
It has a benefit.
Don't be so harsch, hahaha! I find it quite nice.
