Hi all, I have a very niche issue with my Lenovo Y9000X 2024 (Chinese market equivalent to 7i) laptop.
I have Zorin and Windows 11 installed in that order. The only reason I open Windows is to use the Lenovo Spectrum tool to change the RGB settings on the laptop's built-in keyboard. I have the settings set the way I like, but occasionally when booting the laptop it resets to the factory default settings. When this happens, I open Windows to put it back the way I like it. I would be happy to delete the Windows partition and reclaim the space it occupies, but if the issue persists after Windows is deleted, then I would have to reinstall Windows to fix it. This laptop is currently unsupported by OpenRGB.
My question is, is the keyboard RGB being reset to factory default settings likely to be a bug with automatic BIOS updates, or connected to Windows in some way? In other words, if I were to delete Windows, is it likely that the problem would go away on its own (i.e., the keyboard lighting settings stay as they are permanently)?
Most likely, this is a firmware or EC controller reset, not Windows OS.
So, yes, if you remove Windows OS entirely, you might not be able to reset the RGB configuration if the Firmware does a hard reset on it.
But, does that Spectrum Tool work in Windows OS in a Virtual environment?
If it does, you can launch the VM or VB, reset RGB, without ever rebooting.
Checking on this - Yes, the Spectrum Tool is proprietary software...
I think, it depends here how Your RGB is working. When You set it up in the Software, will that be saved or has the Software to be running in Background for the set up RGB.
I know, that this is neccessary for some Stuff. Without the Software, You wouldn't have the Effect You want. So, this would have to be known first.
It is saved to the onboard memory. It stays as-is even when the computer is in GRUB, BIOS, or Linux. (until the issue arises!)
To help narrow this down, here is a new detail from today: I have the kernel panic issue with kernel 7.0, and I was testing my new GRUB settings which should save the preferred kernel. I booted the computer into GRUB, with keyboard RGB the way I like it, then booted into Zorin with kernel 7.0 and got the kernel panic screen. Upon rebooting, the keyboard RGB had reset to default settings. I haven't booted Windows recently, though I'm on it now to put the RGB back how I like it.
So, it has a Chip where it is saved. Okay. In this Case, it should theoretically still be saved even when Windows is gone.
When now the Kernel Panic leads to a Reset ... It reads like it would have affected the save RGB Settings ... but when it is saved on an extra Chip?
