Has anyone tried Core on an old machine (c 2008). Currently running Lite 17.1 r2 on that machine and experiencing the odd lockup. Wondering if Core was any better now that some tweaks have been applied to the OS. Any opinions?
I had the lite on a 2010 machine, but with SSD. It was running well.
I installed Core and it also runs well. It's a little heavier, but the difference isn't that big.
Well I took the plunge and installed core on my 2008 machine and it's running well. Boot is a little slower even with 6.8 kernel but it's not bad. Interesting thing I now have 4 swap partitions lol.
You could also try lighter distros in live mode such as Puppy Linux or Q4OS Trinity Edition. Another option might be SliTaz (Simple, light, incredible, Temporary autonomous zone).
Why You have 4 Swap Partitions? I mean, real Partitions, not Swap Files? But even then it would be too much.
The fresh install picked them up and automatically added them to fstab.
Looks weird for me. And it seems to be a lot of wasted Disc Space. Is this the Result of an automated Installation or did You manually partitioned the Drive(s)?
This was the result of automated install. The swap partitions were already in existence from testing a Lite install. SDA and SDB are turned off in the Bios because they are slow but Zorin still picked them up.
Ah, there already existed. And you didn't delete them. I understood that Zorin created this 4 One's at once in the Installation Process.
Have edited fstab to only load one partition on SSD now.
I am liking core so far. Mcfly was right it is a bit heavier that Lite. For instance the start menu is slower to show after clicked and apps slightly slower to load. But it seems more polished than Lite. Lite is pretty basic probably why it is slightly faster. Think I will stick with core.
Try to disable animations to make things a tad snappier; visual effects are computational expensive and older hardware may struggle with it.
Zorin Appearance -> Effects -> Enable Animations.
Thanks for that zenzen has made it a bit snappier.
