I have been using Zorin with no connection problems and last week my ethernet quit working. My situation seems close to this post, followed it most of the way through:
Ethernet won't connect in Zorin OS 16. The ethernet adapter (same model as in post) shows up with "sudo lshw -C network" and I have checked the cable, modem, router.
I think there were updates shortly before it quit working, but not sure what was updated.
I am a Linux rookie, have been getting by with scouring forums and internet searches. The instructions for installing the new driver in the post left me behind, plus they were for Zorin 16. Since the problem was a cat chewing on the cables, I didn't know if it applied.
Does your mobile phone service provider allow tethering? If it does, use your phone for internet connection, open a terminal and enter:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Have you tried rolling back to a previous linux kernel.
From grub menu, select Advanced Options for Zorin" and choose the previus kernel generic version to boot.
See if that works. If so could be issue with latest kernel.
I'm pretty much a neophyte when it comes to mobile devices. I have a mobile phone with free text/calls that has 1 gb free data/month (TextNow.) Their website doesn't address tethering. I did try to do the tethering yesterday using an old forum posting, but I couldn't tell if it was connecting correctly and couldn't get any internet on the PC. The phone settings show only 86 mb of data left although I haven't intentionally used it for anything else.
I can't get the grub menu to come up with any method I have found online: esc, tab, delete. Tried tapping and holding keys, it just goes to the bios or keep booting. What's the secret?
Try with F12.
Some bios allow you to change the key. See if yours has this option and if it has been set to something else.
I think you may be confusing grub menu with BIOS menu. Grub menu is the one you should see when you boot. Example below:
"Advanced Options for Zorin" is the 2nd menu item on grub menu.
F12 doesn't work either. I found "press the esc key for startup menu" option in advanced power-on options, and it is enabled.
Is that right?
"I think you may be confusing grub menu with BIOS menu. Grub menu is the one you should see when you boot. Example below:"
That screen does not come up.
It appears to be this option, but if you've already tried pressing it and it doesn't display the menu, you'll probably have to modify some grub setting.
Let's wait for someone with more experience on this.
What screen does come up when you boot? can you post a screenshot.
When in this screen press F9 to enter em boot menu.
Reinstalled Zorin. Works. Life is good again.
Sometimes reinstallation is the quickest/cleanest solution. Good you are back running. I have marked your last post as "Solution".
