So i was checking the packages that come with zorin 17.1 Lite and turns out that many of them use 'proprietary code' and cannot be audited.
Isn't the whole point of linux to use open source software?

Thunar FM is 100% open source:
However, in Canonicals inclusion of it in Xubuntu, they claim a special licensing (true for many packages in Ubuntu), viewable here:
https://ubuntu.com/legal/intellectual-property-policy
This is Canonicals doing.
that sucks, is there a way to change it to the foss version?
You could try xfe instead?

Theee are lots of alternatives to choose from:
yes i can try to install something else, but what i really don't understand is why use a version of thunar that is proprietary when there is the original one that is foss.
why did the zorin team decide to use the proprietary software instead of the open source?
is it because zorin is based in ubuntu and therefore they must use the same packages? i just don't get it
Yes - and I also was not aware of the extent to which Canonical has been doing this until you asked.
For a list of proprietary free distributions:
I remember trying an early version of gNewSense (inactive since 2016) and it was completely free of hardware blobs which meant connecting to the internet failed, even with ethernet. It's swings and roubdabouts.
